South Jeolla Province Launches ‘Namdo Train Trail’ Utilizing Gyeongjeon Line… Up to 35% Discount

Connecting Major Namdo Hubs Including Boseong, Jangheung, and Haenam… Reservations Begin May 1st – Revitalizing Local Tourism and Supporting Population-Declining Regions Through Rail, Bus, and Accommodation Packages

(Muan = Break News) Reporter Lee Hak-su = South Jeolla Province is introducing the ‘Namdo Train Trail,’ a travel program utilizing the Gyeongjeon Line that allows travelers to fully enjoy the beautiful nature and culture of the southern region.

South Jeolla Province announced that it will begin recruiting travelers for the ‘Namdo Train Trail’ on May 1st and will launch full-scale pilot operations starting on the 23rd. This program is a wide-area railway tourism product promoted through the cooperation of South Jeolla Province, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, five local governments (Busan, Gwangju, Ulsan, and Gyeongnam), and the Korea Railroad Corporation as part of the Southern Region Wide-Area Tourism Development Project. The ‘Namdo Train Trail’ is a 2-day, 1-night package tour centered on the Gyeongjeon Line railway network connecting Mokpo to Busan, linking major train stations with nearby tourist attractions via bus. It is offered to travelers at a price up to 35% lower than market rates, covering train and bus fares as well as accommodation.

The scope of support is particularly significant for courses that include areas experiencing population decline, such as Boseong, Jangheung, and Haenam. These regions offer higher discounts than other areas—including 75% off train fares, 70% off group bus fees, and 50% off accommodation—making for a cost-effective trip.

This travel program consists of a total of four specialized courses designed to accommodate the convenience and preferences of travelers. Each course operates by having passengers disembark at a major hub station and tour nearby attractions using a dedicated bus.

Course 1 (Departing from Busan - Namdo Southern Region Tour): Visits the Haenam Ttangkkut Observatory, the starting point of the Korean Peninsula, and tranquil private gardens. Next, this is a healing-focused course where you can enjoy forest bathing at Jangheung Cypress Woodland and food at the Saturday Market.

Course 2 (Departing from Busan - Culture Tour): Passing through the lush green Daehan Tea Plantation in Boseong, you will experience the deep history of the Southern region by exploring Jeonil Building 245, a symbol of Gwangju's modern history, and the Asian Culture Center (ACC), a hub of Asian culture.

Course 3 (Departing from Mokpo - Southeast Region Tour): Tour Busan's landmarks, Haeundae and Oryukdo, as well as the Taehwa River National Garden in Ulsan. It is particularly noteworthy for including a brewery experience featuring local characteristics.

Course 4 (Departing from Mokpo - Western Gyeongnam Region Tour): Enjoy the scenic beauty of Western Gyeongnam by visiting Jinju Fortress, where history comes alive, the Gyeongsangnam-do Arboretum, Ssanggyesa Temple in Hadong, and the House of Choi Champan, the setting of the novel *Toji*.

This program is scheduled to operate year-round, starting with its first run on May 23. Reservations and detailed information can be found on the Korail website or the Korail Tourism Development website.

Jeonnam Province plans to analyze the results of this pilot project and further expand tourism products centered on the cities and counties served by the Gyeongjeon Line and the Mokpo-Boseong Line. Through this, the province aims to accelerate regional economic revitalization and attract tourists.

Choi Young-ju, Director General of the Tourism and Sports Bureau of Jeonnam Province, stated, "Developing the southern region into a core hub for Korean tourism through railway-linked travel products will mark a new leap forward for K-tourism." He added, "We will do our utmost to create attractive travel destinations that highlight Jeonnam's unique flavors and charms, encouraging tourists to stay an extra day."
