Jeonnam Office of Education Head-on to Overcome 2028 College Admissions Changes with ‘Teacher-Centered Network’
Voluntary teacher network launched across 6 fields… Establishing a field-oriented cooperative model for college guidance; '2028 College Admissions Development Team' conducts in-depth analysis of admissions for major universities in Seoul, medical schools in the Honam region, and regional talent selections; "Expanding selection of prospective graduates and strengthening subject-based competency assessments… School-tailored strategies are essential."
(Muan = Break News) Reporter Lee Hak-su = The ‘Jeonnam General High School Teacher-Centered Network,’ supported by the Jeonnam Office of Education, is intensifying field research and information-sharing activities in line with the reform of the college admissions system for the upcoming 2028 academic year.
Moving beyond simple information-delivery training, teachers are directly analyzing college admissions procedures and developing field-tailored materials, drawing attention as a new cooperative model for college guidance in general high schools in the Jeonnam region.
This year, the Jeonnam General High School Teacher Network is operating in a subdivided manner across a total of six fields to reflect the demands of the school field. Specifically, the network is composed of the following: a network of general high school vice principals, a network of college admissions directors, the 2028 College Admissions Development Team, the KCUeep Counseling Teacher Corps, a college admissions information magazine development and production team, and a college admissions expert training team.
These networks, which began their activities last April, will continue their voluntary research and collaboration until this coming December with the goal of strengthening the college admission competitiveness of general high school students in Jeonnam.
In particular, the data recently released by the ‘2028 College Admissions Development Team,’ which independently analyzed and released the 2028 academic year admission plans of 15 major universities in Seoul, is creating a significant stir in schools.
According to the analysis results, a clear trend emerged in the admission structures of the 15 major universities in Seoul: the number of admission slots available to graduates (repeaters) has decreased, while the number of slots centered on current students (prospective graduates) has significantly expanded. A selection trend centered on current high school seniors was confirmed at major top-tier universities, including the so-called "SKY" universities, and the expansion of recruitment focused on natural sciences and medical/pharmacy fields was cited as a prominent feature.
Additionally, changes in the evaluation methods for the Student Record-based Curriculum Screening are noteworthy. There is a growing trend toward incorporating "Curriculum Competency Evaluation," which assesses both academic ability and coursework completion, moving away from quantitative evaluations based solely on rank grades. Consequently, it is projected that the importance of students' proactive subject selection and substantial academic history management will increase significantly in schools in the future.
The development team also conducted an analysis of changes in medical schools in the Honam region and the Regional Talent Screening, which are closely related to students in the Jeonnam area. Given the convergence of the expansion of the Regional Talent Screening and the trend toward selecting current students, the team shared in-depth implications regarding how high schools should establish the direction of college guidance.
A key feature of the materials produced this time is that they go beyond a simple list of statistics; they analyze the trends of change by screening type and field, enhancing practicality so that the findings can be immediately utilized in actual student counseling. In addition, the counseling teacher group of the Korean Council for University Education and the college admissions information magazine development and production team are strengthening their collaborative system to rapidly disseminate changing admissions information to schools, while the college admissions expert training team is focusing on building a sustainable pool of specialized personnel for college admissions support within the region.
An official from the Jeonnam Provincial Office of Education stated, "In the rapidly changing college admissions environment, the collective intelligence and expertise of schools have become more important than ever," adding, "We will continue to provide unwavering administrative and financial support to ensure that a teacher-centered network establishes itself as the core foundation for college admissions guidance in general high schools in Jeonnam."
