Jeonnam Office of Education Undertakes Major Transformation of Career Education in Line with the ‘AI Era’… Establishing a Practice-Oriented System

Holding the '2026 Career Education Conference,' linking with the curriculum and expanding new industry experiences - Intensive support for the ‘career transition period’ of 6th graders, 3rd graders, and 1st graders, and promotion of AI and glocal startup projects

(Muan = Break News) Reporter Lee Hak-su = The Jeollanam-do Office of Education is embarking on a comprehensive structural transformation of career education to keep pace with the expansion of the rapidly changing AI industry and shifts in the future job market. The core of the initiative is to move away from the existing focus on simple experiences to solidify ‘practice-oriented’ career education linked to the school curriculum, and to strengthen students’ self-directed career planning capabilities.

On the 3rd, the Jeonnam Office of Education held the ‘2026 Career Education Conference’ at the Suncheon Bay Eco-Culture Education Center, attended by approximately 180 middle and high school career guidance teachers, and announced these implementation plans.

The first pillar of this plan is the substantiation of career education based on the school curriculum. In conjunction with the Free Semester System and the High School Credit System, the Provincial Office of Education is providing intensive support for career exploration and counseling to students in the so-called "career transition period," including 6th graders in elementary school, 3rd graders in middle school, and 1st graders in high school.

Rather than mere one-off events, career education is integrated into regular subject classes and creative experiential activities to help students design their futures within their daily learning process. In particular, the plan is to concretize individual students' career plans by strengthening the secondary "Career and Vocation" subject and one-on-one counseling with dedicated career teachers.

Student-tailored programs are also being significantly enhanced. By collaborating with career experience support centers in 22 cities and counties within Jeonnam Province, schools and local experience sites are closely linked; furthermore, one-time field trips are being avoided, and multi-session programs are being expanded.

A notable feature is the "Glocal New Industry Startup Experience Project." Students will not stop at simply observing workplaces; instead, they will experience the entire process, from planning startup ideas to designing AI, producing prototypes, and presenting their ideas. In addition, plans are in place to enhance practical understanding of the future job market through programs linked to Jeonnam’s strategic industries, such as digital technology, renewable energy, and future agriculture.

Support measures for teachers have also been established to improve the quality of career education. The Provincial Office of Education plans to operate a regional network of career guidance teachers and systematically enhance counseling capabilities through training and research competitions.

At the conference held on this day, the Jeonnam Provincial Government’s AI Industry Promotion Team participated and showcased cooperation models with local governments, including presenting plans for fostering the AI industry and cultivating talent. This is interpreted as a commitment to immediately reflect the vivid voices from the changing industrial landscape in the educational field.

Jeon Seong-ah, Head of the Career Education Division at the Jeonnam Provincial Office of Education, stated, “Career education is only meaningful when it leads to practical actions connected to students’ lives,” adding, “We will do our utmost to ensure that students in Jeonnam can cultivate the capacity to design their own futures through practical support that can be felt in the school field.”
