Jeonnam Gwangju Metropolitan Council Agriculture and Fisheries Committee Discusses Measures to Resolve Management Difficulties for Freshwater Eel Farmers

Chairman Ryu Ki-joon Holds Meeting with Producers Association… "Double Burden of Falling Prices and Rising Feed Costs; We Will Do Our Best to Provide Substantive Budgetary and Policy Support"

(Break News Jeonnam Gwangju) Reporter Lee Hak-su = The Agriculture and Fisheries Committee of the Jeonnam Gwangju Metropolitan Council has taken active steps to stabilize the management of freshwater eel farms and establish a supply and demand base, as these farms are facing difficulties due to falling farmgate prices resulting from increased production and rising feed costs.

On the 19th, the Agriculture and Fisheries Committee held a meeting with the Korea Freshwater Eel Producers Association in the committee's conference room to listen to the difficulties faced by the aquaculture industry and to extensively discuss practical support measures.

The meeting was attended by Agriculture and Fisheries Committee Chairman Ryu Ki-joon (Democratic Party of Korea, Hwasun 2), Korea Freshwater Eel Producers Association President Shin Young-rae and executives, and relevant officials from the local government's Agriculture and Fisheries Headquarters. This meeting was organized to hear the voices of fishing households on-site and to devise countermeasures, as they are facing a "double burden": overproduction resulting from a surge in glass eel stockings last year, the consequent drop in farmgate prices, and increased compound feed prices caused by high exchange rates and rising international fishmeal prices.

During the meeting, the Producers Association strongly requested measures to help fishing households overcome their management crisis, including: ▲ the implementation of an emergency purchasing program; ▲ the allocation of a special budget for supply and demand stabilization and the utilization of supplementary budgets; ▲ the easing of repayment conditions for compound feed purchase funds; and ▲ the establishment of a mid-to-long-term supply and demand management system.

In response, relevant city departments decided to promote the expansion of online sales channels and discount events to stimulate immediate consumption. Furthermore, as a mid-to-long-term measure, they plan to continuously propose to the government: ▲ the expansion of research on the development of the city's own artificial eel seed production technology; ▲ the early introduction of a glass eel stocking quota system; and ▲ the expansion of support for compound feed purchase funds and the easing of repayment conditions.

Ryu Ki-joon, Chairman of the Agriculture and Fisheries Committee, stated, "Fishermen are deeply troubled by the double burden of falling production prices and rising feed costs resulting from increased stocking volumes." He added, "The City Council will do its utmost to secure the necessary budget and provide policy support so that the urgent requests from the field do not remain mere short-term stopgap measures but lead to the actual management stability of fishing households."

Chairman Ryu further urged the relevant departments to "expedite the implementation of tasks that can be carried out immediately, such as promoting short-term consumption and easing loan repayments." He emphasized, "The Agriculture and Fisheries Committee will also serve as a reliable pillar of support for local aquaculture households until they overcome this crisis."
