Gwangju, Jeonnam Special City: 227 Cases of Heat-Related Illnesses Reported Amid Heatwave… 'Warning' Issued for the Elderly and Outdoor Workers
Those Aged 60 and Over Account for 46.7% of Total… Incidence Rate for Men 3.4 Times Higher Than Women; All-Out Response Including Suspension of Outdoor Work and Enhanced Safety Checks During Heatwave Advisories
(Break News Jeonnam Gwangju) Reporter Lee Hak-su = As the number of heat-related illness cases in the Jeonnam Gwangju region surpasses 200 amidst the continuing heatwave, health management for the elderly and outdoor workers is on high alert.
According to the Jeonnam Gwangju Integrated Special City Heat-Related Illness Emergency Room Surveillance System, as of the 5th, the cumulative number of heat-related illness cases in the region totaled 227 (191 in Jeonnam, 36 in Gwangju). Fortunately, no deaths have occurred so far.
Analysis revealed that heat-related illnesses were concentrated among the elderly aged 60 and over, men, and those working in outdoor environments. By age group, those in their 60s accounted for the largest number with 49 people (21.6%), followed by those in their 50s with 46 people (20.3%) and those in their 40s with 31 people (13.7%). Notably, patients aged 60 and older numbered 106, accounting for 46.7% of the total, requiring special caution. By gender, men accounted for 175 people (77.1%), which is approximately 3.4 times more than women (52 people, 22.9%). Regarding the type of illness, heat exhaustion was the most common with 145 people (63.9%), followed by heatstroke (33 people), heat cramps (29 people), and heat syncope (13 people).
In terms of the location of occurrence, 190 people, or 83.7% of the total, suffered injuries outdoors. Outdoor workplaces were the most common location with 66 people, followed by rice fields (47 people), areas near residential areas (30 people), and riversides/beaches (18 people). Cases occurred indoors in workplaces (12 people) and homes (10 people). Notably, the number of patients in outdoor workplaces and fields alone totaled 113, accounting for half of the total.
Accordingly, the Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City is strengthening its surveillance system in cooperation with public health centers and emergency medical institutions and is making all-out efforts to protect high-risk groups.
For households of the elderly living alone and the disabled, the city is checking on their well-being using activity sensors and caregivers. For those at high risk of death from loneliness, the city conducts welfare checks at least once every two days when a severe heatwave warning is issued. The senior employment program has also taken measures to completely suspend outdoor activities and switch to indoor activities whenever a heatwave advisory is issued.
In rural areas, the city plans to actively advise against agricultural work during daytime hours via village broadcasts, and for industrial facilities and construction sites, it will strongly recommend providing water, shade, and rest, as well as adjusting working hours. Jeong Gwang-seon, Head of the Health and Welfare Headquarters of Gwangju Metropolitan City, emphasized, “The elderly have a reduced ability to regulate body temperature and find it difficult to recognize early symptoms, so their condition can deteriorate rapidly,” adding, “It is crucial for those around them to show concern, such as checking on the well-being of the elderly living alone and elderly farmers, and refraining from agricultural work during the midday heat.”
