Gwangju Metropolitan City Holds Cooperation Meeting of Deputy Heads of Local Governments… “All-out Response to Summer Disasters Including Heatwaves and Water Safety”
Discussions on linking with the 9th popular election administration’s national agenda and strengthening local government accountability; ordering safety checks for vulnerable groups and a 24-hour response system following the ‘Severe’ heatwave crisis alert.
(Break News Gwangju, Jeonnam) Reporter Lee Hak-su = The Integrated Gwangju Metropolitan City has set out to significantly strengthen the cooperation system among the city, districts, and counties to ensure resident safety, including summer heatwaves and water safety, alongside the successful settlement of the 9th popular election administration.
On the 28th, Gwangju Metropolitan City held the ‘2026 6th Cooperation Meeting of Special City-City/District/County Deputy Heads’ at the Jeongcheol Room of the Muan Government Complex, presided over by Vice Mayor for Administration Hwang Ki-yeon. The meeting focused on sharing key contents of the 6th Central-Local Policy Council and discussing summer disaster response measures. At the meeting, key agenda items included addressing pressing issues such as strengthening the integration of national affairs between the central and local governments and enhancing local government accountability following the launch of the 9th popular election administration, managing water safety during the summer, establishing a labor supervision system for local governments, and preventing heat-related illnesses in public sector workplaces.
The Jeonnam Gwangju Special City emphasized communication and cooperation between the central and local governments to ensure the smooth implementation of the 9th popular election administration's national agenda and local issues. At the same time, it urged basic local governments to strive for resident-centered, responsible administration and performance management. Furthermore, it requested the activation of project-based personnel exchanges, the prompt reflection of standard staffing quotas, and sound organizational and financial management. It also called for strengthened internal inspections and supervision to prevent an over-reliance on sole-source contracts and the fraudulent receipt of local subsidies.
In particular, as the government recently raised the heat wave crisis alert to the highest level, "Severe," measures to prevent summer disasters and safety accidents were given significant weight. It was decided to expand the deployment of safety personnel at vacation spots and areas densely populated by tourists, and to actively promote the implementation of water safety rules, including controlling access to dangerous zones and publicizing the wearing of life jackets.
In addition, it was decided to maintain a 24-hour on-site response system to prevent heat-related illnesses, such as checking on the well-being and strengthening on-site surveillance for vulnerable groups including the elderly living alone and senior farmers, as well as adjusting working hours for workers at outdoor and vulnerable workplaces.
Administrative Vice Mayor Hwang Ki-yeon emphasized, “The matters discussed at today’s meeting are key tasks aimed at enhancing the safety and quality of life of residents and ensuring the stable establishment of the 9th popular election administration.” He urged, “Please promptly share the discussed details with relevant departments, and have the deputy heads of local governments personally oversee the process to ensure that follow-up measures are implemented on-site without any setbacks.”
