Gwangju Metropolitan City to Provide 8.1 Billion Won in Disaster Recovery Funds to Farmers Affected by Abnormal Weather in April

Targeting 2,650 Farmers Suffering from Cold Damage to Orchards and Damage to Garlic; Management Stability Support Measures Including Policy Loan Repayment Deferral and Interest Reduction Also Provided

(Break News Gwangju, Jeonnam) Reporter Lee Hak-su = The Integrated Gwangju Metropolitan City announced on the 30th that it will provide a total of approximately 8.1 billion won in disaster recovery funds and other support to help farmers who suffered significant damage due to abnormal weather conditions that occurred last April.

The recipients of this support are 2,650 farms, finalized after damage reports from farmers, on-site inspections by public officials, a joint central government investigation, and deliberation by the Agricultural Disaster Countermeasures Deliberation Committee.

The types of damage are broadly categorized into two types: cold damage to orchards and physiological disorders in garlic. First, due to abnormally low temperatures last April, damages such as poor fruit set occurred across 2,449 hectares of fruit trees, including pears, apples, and peaches, primarily in Naju and Yeongam. Consequently, a total of 7.79 billion won in disaster recovery funds will be distributed to 2,427 affected farm households.

In addition, damage to 115.8 hectares of "beolgarun" (severe garlic) was recorded in areas such as Jangheung and Haenam, following frequent rainfall and abnormally high temperatures between February and April. Beolgarun is a physiological disorder caused by excessively accelerated garlic growth due to high temperatures and heavy rainfall during the winter and early spring; 334 million won in recovery funds will be provided to 223 farm households.

In addition to direct financial support for recovery, Gwangju Special City in South Jeolla Province is also implementing financial support measures to facilitate the resumption of farming activities and stabilize the management of affected farms. Farms with a damage rate of 30% or more but less than 50% will have their repayment of agricultural policy funds deferred for one year and receive interest reductions. For farms with a damage rate of 50% or more, the repayment deferral period will be extended to two years. In addition, funds necessary to resume farming will be provided through low-interest disaster relief management loans at an annual rate of 1.8%.

Jeong Won-jin, Head of the Food and Horticulture Division of Gwangju Metropolitan City, stated, "We will do our utmost to provide recovery funds and financial support so that farmers suffering from abnormal weather conditions can quickly recover their daily lives and resume farming activities."
