Two Gwangju Representatives Dispatched to ‘San Antonio Sister Cities Youth Summit’ - Sharing Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Policies with Youth from 13 Cities in 10 Countries - San Antonio Youth to Visit Jeonnam-Gwangju in 2027… Expanding Sister City Exchanges
(Break News Jeonnam-Gwangju) Reporter Lee Hak-su = A youth delegation from the Integrated Special City of Jeonnam-Gwangju participated in an international conference held in its sister city, San Antonio, USA, and promoted Jeonnam-Gwangju’s sustainable development policies to the global stage.
The Integrated Special City of Jeonnam-Gwangju announced that it dispatched two youth representatives from Gwangju to the ‘San Antonio Sister Cities Youth Summit,’ held on the 28th (local time) in San Antonio, Texas, USA. Held for eight days from the 23rd to the 30th under the theme of "Sustainable Cities," this summit was hosted by San Antonio, which established a sister city relationship with Gwangju Metropolitan City in 1982, and organized by the local non-profit youth organization "Students of Service."
Fifty-five youths from 13 cities in 10 countries—including the host city of San Antonio and the integrated Gwangju Metropolitan City—as well as Darmstadt, Germany; Querétaro, Mexico; Baguio, Philippines; and Kumamoto, Japan, attended the event and engaged in lively discussions regarding the sustainable future of their respective cities.
Choi Seo-hyun (Pyeongdong Middle School) and Lee Chae-won (Supia Girls' High School), representing Gwangju, served as presenters at the summit. The two students introduced the integrated Gwangju Metropolitan City's key Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) policies and best practices, receiving a great response from youths around the world.
Participants engaged in policy sharing and team discussions among their respective countries, as well as field experience programs. They visited the UNESCO World Heritage site of the Alamo and explored San Jose, participating in cultural experiences through homestays. They also toured eco-friendly resource management sites, such as the water circulation system and solar power generation at the San Antonio Riverwalk.
Student Choi Seo-hyun, who participated in the summit, shared her thoughts, stating, "It was a great opportunity to share sustainable city policies from various countries and to develop international communication skills." Student Lee Chae-won also remarked, "I made new friends in our sister city and had a valuable experience promoting the policies and values of the Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City to the world."
Prior to this, the Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City selected 20 youth candidates through an open call and operated a six-week "Global Leader Training Program" from April to May. After undergoing English debate and presentation training led by native professors at Chonnam National University and SDGs education provided by the Gwangju Council for Sustainable Development, Choi Seo-hyun and Lee Chae-won were selected as the final representatives following a comprehensive evaluation. An official from the Integrated Special City stated, “We have been operating a youth mutual exchange program with the city of San Antonio since 2024 and are continuously expanding exchanges with future generations,” adding, “In 2027, we plan to invite about 30 youths from San Antonio to Gwangju, Jeonnam, to hold an international exchange camp where youths from both cities can participate together.”
