"Jeonnam and Gwangju Join Hands to Cultivate Future Talent"… Super-regional Growth Strategy Forum Held

Approx. 250 Officials from the Ministry of Education, the Committee on Local Government Era, Local Governments, and Universities Attend to Seek Super-regional Cooperation and Joint Talent Development Models for the 'Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City'

(Break News Gwangju·Jeonnam) Reporter Lee Hak-su = The Jeonnam-Gwangju Anchor Center announced that it co-hosted the ‘Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City Super-regional Growth Strategy Forum’ at Donggang Hall, Dongshin University, on the 24th.

The forum was held with great success, attended by approximately 250 people, including officials from the Ministry of Education, the National Research Foundation of Korea, the Committee on Local Government Era, local governments of Jeonnam and Gwangju, and universities. The forum was organized to strengthen the super-regional cooperation system between Jeonnam and Gwangju based on the Regional Growth Talent Development System (Anchor), and to discover joint talent development models that enable mutual growth between the region and universities.

The event opened with a commemorative speech by Lee Ju-hee, Director General of University Support at the Ministry of Education. Following this, Lee Byeong-heon, Chairman of the Committee on Local Era, delivered a keynote speech on the theme of the "5-Polarity, 3-Specialty Balanced Growth Strategy and Inter-regional Talent Development Measures," emphasizing the necessity of super-regional cooperation for balanced regional development.

Specific models for super-regional cooperation were also presented. Chonnam National University introduced a plan to share educational resources between universities and operate joint curriculums through the "Jeonnam-Gwangju Shared University-based Super-regional Cooperation Model (Draft)." Suncheon National University and Honam University presented joint talent development alliance models linked to regional strategic industries—such as smart agriculture, livestock, and fisheries, and AI and data, respectively—proposing directions for promoting practical super-regional cooperation.

In the subsequent presentation of best practices, universities in the Jeonnam and Gwangju regions shared the achievements of their first-year anchor projects. The participating universities introduced various examples of cooperation where the region and the university have grown together, and jointly explored directions for the future development of cooperation models.

During the comprehensive discussion, Lee Byeong-heon, Chairman of the Local Era Committee, served as moderator and engaged in a heated debate on the theme of "Establishing a Super-regional Cooperation System between Jeonnam and Gwangju and Strategies for Sustainable Operation." The panelists exchanged diverse opinions on topics including joint talent development linked to regional strategic industries, functional linkages between universities, the establishment of cooperation systems, and regional growth strategies based on local, industry-university collaboration.

Bae Yong-seok, Director of the Jeonnam Anchor Center, stated, "This forum served as an important opportunity for Jeonnam and Gwangju to jointly establish a system for cultivating talent for regional growth and strengthen the foundation for super-regional cooperation." He added, "We will continue to identify cooperation models that allow the region and universities to grow together."

Kim Bo-hyeon, Director of the Gwangju Anchor Center, also emphasized, "Super-regional cooperation that transcends university boundaries is essential for sustainable regional growth." He further stated, "We will link the educational and industrial capabilities possessed by Gwangju and Jeonnam to cultivate future talent who will lead regional strategic industries, and we will further strengthen the cooperation system for mutual development in the Honam region."
