Jeonnam and Gwangju Fire ‘Signal’ for Joint Bid for 2028 G20 Summit… Basic Plan Prepared
Final briefing held presided over by Governor Kim Young-rok… ‘Decentralized and Solidarity’ Model PresentedResearch Commission Representative Tak Hyun-min Presents Research Results, “Equipped with Differentiated Competitiveness in Climate Crisis and K-Culture”All-out Effort Announced, Including Formation of ‘Pan-Citizen Bid Committee’ in Line with Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Selection Criteria in August
(Muan = Break News) Reporter Lee Hak-su = Jeollanam-do has joined hands with Gwangju Metropolitan City to embark on full-scale steps toward jointly bidding for the ‘2028 G20 Summit.’ The plan is to go beyond a mere expression of intent to host and demonstrate competitiveness as a ‘prepared host city’ equipped with differentiated logic and infrastructure.
Jeonnam Province announced that it held a final briefing for the ‘Research Service on the Basic Plan for Bid for the 2028 G20 Summit’ on the 15th at the Jeong Yak-yong Room of the Provincial Office, presided over by Jeonnam Governor Kim Young-rok. Relevant directors and bureau chiefs attended the briefing session, where Tak Hyun-min, CEO of Tikklemoa (who previously served as the Presidential Protocol Secretary under the Moon Jae-in administration) and a man with extensive experience in planning and directing national events, presented the results of the commissioned research.
According to the research results, Jeonnam and Gwangju were analyzed to possess independent competitiveness across all categories—including the justification for hosting, regional strengths, conditions for operating the summit, and contributions to national and regional development—which were the criteria previously used to select host cities for APEC summits.
In particular, the shared history of democracy in South Korea and the values of human rights and peace were highly evaluated, along with the region's characteristics as the nation's largest hub for new and renewable energy and cultural assets embodying the archetype of K-culture. This assessment indicates that they possess optimal symbolic significance as host cities for the G20 summit, where recent global agendas such as responding to the climate crisis and the energy transition will be discussed.
The most notable aspect of this proposal is the "decentralized and integrated international event model," which organically connects key hubs in Jeonnam and Gwangju. The strategy is to effectively imprint the region's identity on world leaders by simultaneously utilizing key local infrastructure, such as the Yeosu Expo Convention Center, the former Jeonnam Provincial Office, and the National Asian Culture Center.
The province maintains that its operational capabilities have already been proven. It believes that perfect support for the summit is possible by combining the experience of successfully hosting large-scale international events, such as the 2012 Yeosu World Expo and the 2023 Suncheon Bay International Garden Expo, with the international conference know-how of the Kim Dae-jung Convention Center.
Furthermore, if the bid to host the G20 Summit is successful, it is expected to present a role model for balanced national development to the world, while generating massive economic ripple effects regionally, including the revitalization of the tourism and MICE industries and job creation.
In conjunction with the launch of the unified Jeonnam Special City, the province plans to enter into a full-scale bid campaign by forming a "G20 Bid Committee" and a "Pan-Citizen Bid Committee" comprised of figures from various sectors. South Jeolla Province Governor Kim Young-rok emphasized, “Hosting the G20 is a fervent wish shared by all citizens of Gwangju and South Jeolla,” adding, “We must begin joint promotional activities with Gwangju as soon as possible.” He further expressed his ambition, stating, “Taking the hosting of the G20 as an opportunity, we will build a Hanok resort that will impress world leaders staying there, making it a new local landmark.”
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs launched a research project last April to establish selection criteria for the host city of the 2028 G20 Summit, and plans to finalize specific selection procedures and evaluation standards by this coming August.
