Okcheon County Agricultural Technology Center Promotes Healthy Eating Habits in Infants and Toddlers by Linking Public School Meals with Rural Experiences

The Okcheon County Agricultural Technology Center is organizing the "Second Half Public School Meal Item Experience Event" for kindergarten and daycare students in the county from September 4 to October.

This event was planned to help children understand ingredients used in public school meals and foster a sense of familiarity with local produce by allowing them to directly observe and harvest locally produced agricultural products.

The items featured in the experience during the second half of the year are grapes, sweet potatoes, and figs. Participating children will visit relevant farms to engage in diverse field experiences, such as picking seasonal grapes, digging up sweet potatoes from the fields, and harvesting figs. By observing firsthand the cultivation process of the food items they usually encounter on their school lunch trays, they will naturally learn the value of agriculture and the importance of food.

During the first-half events held in May and June, tomato harvesting and tofu-making experiences took place, attracting a positive response with 178 students from 11 local institutions participating. The county anticipates that these consecutive experiences in the first and second halves will help establish healthy eating habits for infants and toddlers and further enhance trust in public school meals.

Yoo Jeong-yong, Director of the Okcheon County Agricultural Technology Center, stated that agricultural products harvested directly by children in the field are more than just food; they are vivid educational assets for learning about nature. He added that the center plans to diversify experiential opportunities linking locally produced agricultural products with public school meals.

The Okcheon County Agricultural Technology Center intends to continuously operate diverse programs combining public school meals and rural experiences to solidify the foundation of trust in local agricultural products and expand a virtuous cycle of healthy food consumption.
