Okcheon County Holds Consecutive Chunhyang Festivals Across the District... Tanamgong Gwak Si-seonsaeng, Jungbong Jo Heon-seonsaeng, and Mokdam Seowon
Okcheon County is holding Chunhyang festivals in various locations throughout the district to commemorate the achievements of ancient sages and to emulate their wisdom and virtue.
The Tanamgong Gwak Si-seonsaeng Mohyeonhoe (Chairman Lee Gyu-wan) and the Seonsan Gwak Clan Association (Chairman Gwak Gyun-sang) held a Chunhyang festival on the 23rd at the site of the Tanamgong Gwak Si-seonsaeng Memorial Monument in Samcheong-ri, Okcheon-eup, with approximately 60 attendees, including clan members and local Confucian scholars.
Gwak Si-seonsaeng was a civil official during the mid-Joseon Dynasty who was highly regarded by prominent figures of his time for his outstanding scholarship and virtue. Local Confucian scholars honor his legacy by holding a memorial service every year on the first day of the third lunar month. The ancestral rites on this day were conducted solemnly, with Chairman Lee Gyu-wan serving as the Chief Officiant, former Korea Federation of Arts and Culture Associations Chairman Ryu Jeong-hyeon as the Second Officiant, and Chairman Kwak Gyun-sang as the Third Officiant.
On the upcoming 30th, the Annae-myeon Confucian Association (Chairman Kim Hye-mi) and the Baecheon Jo Clan Munyeolgong Branch Association (Chairman Cho Jong-yeong) are scheduled to hold the Spring Ancestral Rite at Huryuldang in Doi-ri, Annae-myeon, to commemorate the patriotic loyalty of Jo Heon, also known as Jungbong. Approximately 60 people, including clan members and local Confucian scholars, will attend the event. The rites will be conducted by Lee Heon-chang, Acting Deputy County Governor of Okcheon County, serving as the Chief Officiant; Chu Bok-seong, Chairman of the Okcheon County Council, as the Second Officiant; and Chairman Cho Jong-yeong as the Third Officiant.
Huryuldang (Chungcheongbuk-do Monument No. 13) is a study hall built by the righteous army leader Jo Heon in 1588. It was relocated to its current location in 1864 and has remained in its present state after undergoing renovations. Following this, the Chunhyangje will be held on the 3rd of next month at Mokdam Seowon in Geumam-ri, Dong-myeon. Approximately 60 people are expected to attend, including members of the Okcheon Jeon Clan Panseogong Branch Association (Chairman Jeon Jae-bok) and local Confucian scholars. Acting Deputy County Governor Lee Heon-chang will serve as the Chief Ritual Officer, Director Park Jin-ha as the Second Ritual Officer, and Chairman Jeon Jae-bok as the Third Ritual Officer.
Mokdam Seowon began in 1765 with the enshrinement of the portrait of Songjeong Jeon Paeng-ryeong, but was demolished due to Heungseon Daewongun's decree to abolish private academies. It was restored in 1936 and currently enshrines the portraits of Jeon Paeng-ryeong, Jeon Sik, and Jeon Yu together.
A county official stated, "The Chunhyangje for Tanamgong Gwak Si, Huryuldang, and Mokdam Seowon holds great significance as a ritual to honor the great achievements of local sages as we welcome spring," adding, "We will strive to widely promote and preserve our nation's unique traditional rituals for future generations."
