"Children First, Vehicles Slow Down"… Jeonnam Gwangju Metropolitan City Launches Traffic Safety Campaign for School Commutes

Joint Public-Private-Citizen Campaign at Oryong Elementary School Intensive Promotion of Customized Safety Rules for Drivers and Pedestrians; 7 Billion Won Invested This Year to Significantly Improve Facilities in 173 Child Protection Zones Within the City

(Muan = Break News) Reporter Lee Hak-su = With the start of the second semester, Jeonnam Gwangju Metropolitan City has launched a joint public-private-police campaign to prevent traffic accidents in child protection zones and create safe routes to school.

On the morning of the 27th, the Metropolitan City conducted a traffic safety campaign for school commutes in the area around Oryong Elementary School in Samhyang-eup, Muan-gun. This event was organized to create an environment where students, returning to school after vacation, can safely commute, and to establish a pedestrian-centered traffic culture throughout the community. The campaign on this day saw the full participation of officials from relevant agencies, including the Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Metropolitan City, the Jeonnam Provincial Police Agency, the Autonomous Police Commission, Muan County, and the Muan Police Station, as well as representatives from private organizations such as the Green Mothers Association and the Model Drivers Association, thereby solidifying the cooperative framework.

Attendees conducted active promotional activities targeting drivers and pedestrians visiting school zones around schools during school hours. Key points covered included: ▲ adherence to the speed limit (30 km/h) within school zones; ▲ compliance with the obligation to protect pedestrians and stop temporarily before crosswalks; ▲ prohibition of illegal parking and stopping within school zones; ▲ prohibition of using mobile phones or DMB while driving; and ▲ establishment of a pedestrian-first traffic culture.

Customized safety guidance for students and parents was also provided on-site. Children going to school were guided on intuitive and easy-to-implement pedestrian rules, such as "stopping and looking left and right before crossing a crosswalk" and "refraining from using mobile phones while walking." Drivers were strongly urged to drive slowly and stop first for pedestrians when entering school zones. Joint public-private participants utilized placards, sashes, and promotional materials bearing slogans such as "Let's protect traffic safety in front of schools together!", "Children first! Drive slowly!", and "Stop right before crosswalks!" to encourage public interest and voluntary compliance with traffic regulations.

Bae Jun, Director of the Metropolitan Safety Policy Division of the Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City, emphasized, "With the end of summer vacation and the start of the second semester, the volume of students traveling to and from school is surging again." He added, "Since child protection zones can be difficult to see clearly or children may exhibit sudden, unpredictable behavior, it is essential for drivers to slow down first and carefully observe their surroundings."

He continued, "The most certain way to prevent accidents in child protection zones and crosswalks is to adopt a driving habit of coming to a complete stop and checking for pedestrians one more time." He stated, "We will spare no administrative support to create an environment where children, the future of our region, can commute with peace of mind and to ensure that a proper traffic safety culture takes root." Meanwhile, the Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City is not stopping at simple guidance activities but is simultaneously carrying out improvements to school routes. With a total budget of 7 billion won this year, it is extensively promoting traffic safety infrastructure reinforcement projects targeting 173 child protection zones in the region, including the expansion of unmanned enforcement equipment, the installation of yellow crosswalks, and the installation of protective fences.
