[Here is the English version of the artice] People Power Party candidate Park Min-sik (Busan Buk-gap) strongly criticized the Lee Jae-myung administration and the Democratic Party of Korea over the Starbucks marketing controversy.
In a post on social media, Park stated, “The response by the Lee Jae-myung government and the Democratic Party to Starbucks’ marketing misstep has gone beyond the bounds of common sense and is veering toward a dangerous, totalitarian frenzy aimed at shaking up the election landscape.” He added, “Democratic Party leader Chung Cheong-rae has sparked a boycott movement, the Ministry of the Interior and Safety is amplifying it, and President Lee Jae-myung is encouraging it.”
Park also noted that Starbucks had already taken responsibility by issuing an apology and replacing its CEO, arguing that further judgment should be left to consumers. He accused the government and ruling party of branding the company with a “scarlet letter” before any legal process and mobilizing state institutions to pressure it, calling the situation “a 21st-century people’s tribunal in South Korea.”
He further argued that the impact of the boycott would ultimately fall on store workers and part-time employees, particularly young people, stating, “They must stop trampling on the livelihoods of society’s most vulnerable for political purposes.”
Park also took issue with remarks by Min Hyung-bae, a Democratic Party candidate for the Gwangju metropolitan integration mayoral position. Park claimed that Min had told Shinsegae Group it would “pay the price,” warning that this could put a 4 trillion won-scale complex shopping mall and Starfield development project in Gwangju at risk of delays in approvals. He added, “Political retaliation is ultimately threatening jobs and the future of Gwangju citizens.”
He compared the current situation to the past “No Japan” boycott movement, arguing that the Democratic Party repeatedly demonizes specific targets and promotes division during election periods. He also criticized the current government’s economic policies, including the so-called “Yellow Envelope Law,” saying they are discouraging corporate activity and harming the broader economy.
Park further claimed that the spirit of the May 18 Gwangju Democratization Movement lies in defending freedom and democracy against authoritarianism, and accused the Democratic Party of exploiting it for political purposes.
He concluded by stating that voters would judge the Democratic Party in the upcoming local and by-elections.
