Min Hyeong-bae, Mayor of Jeonnam-Gwangju, Visits Biseok Senior Center in Haenam… On-site Inspection of Heatwave Vulnerable Groups

Checking on the Well-being of Seniors and Inspecting Air Conditioning Operation… "Urging Refrain from Outdoor Activities During Daytime" City Makes All-Out Effort to Protect Seniors by Operating Over 10,000 Heatwave Shelters and Mobilizing Care Personnel

(Break News Jeonnam-Gwangju) Reporter Lee Hak-su = Amid the continuous heatwave, Jeonnam-Gwangju Special City has launched on-site administrative measures to protect the health and safety of heatwave-vulnerable groups, including the elderly.

On the 3rd, Min Hyeong-bae, Mayor of Jeonnam-Gwangju, visited the Biseok Senior Center in San-myeon, Haenam-gun, which is designated and operating as a heatwave shelter. He checked on the well-being of the seniors and listened to their difficulties on-site.

On this day, Mayor Min inspected the health status of the seniors using the center and the proper operation of the air conditioning facilities. He also personally verified any inconveniences experienced while using the shelter. Mayor Min urged the public at the site, “Please refrain from going out or engaging in outdoor activities as much as possible during the daytime when the heatwave persists, and take care of your health by drinking water regularly and frequently.” In addition, he instructed the relevant officials present at the site to maintain a preemptive and proactive response system to prevent damage from the heatwave.

Currently, the Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City is actively implementing measures to protect the elderly, such as designating and operating approximately 10,000 locations—including senior centers, village halls, and welfare centers—as cooling shelters to prevent heat-related illnesses.

Furthermore, the city is making every effort to ensure the safety of vulnerable groups by mobilizing over 4,900 life support workers and 13,600 activity support workers for the disabled to check on their well-being at least once a day via phone or visit, and to provide guidance on heatwave prevention measures.
