Min Hyung-bae, Mayor of Jeonnam-Gwangju, Makes First Move After Inauguration at KEPCO… “Opening the Semiconductor Era in the Southwest Region”
Visited KEPCO Headquarters on the 2nd to Inspect Power Supply for Semiconductor Cluster and Preemptive Power Grid Construction - Emphasized, “Samsung and SK Invest 800 Trillion Won in Honam… Will Achieve Tangible Results Within the Lee Jae-myung Administration’s Term” - Activated a Strong ‘One Team’ Cooperation System, Including the Establishment of a Working-Level Hotline with KEPCO
(Break News Jeonnam-Gwangju) Reporter Lee Hak-su = Min Hyung-bae, Mayor of Jeonnam-Gwangju, expressed his strong determination to lay the foundation for the region’s future high-tech industries by visiting the headquarters of Korea Electric Power Corporation (hereinafter KEPCO) as his first official field visit since taking office.
The Jeonnam-Gwangju Special City announced that Mayor Min Hyung-bae visited the KEPCO headquarters in Naju on the 2nd to inspect plans for a stable power supply and power grid construction for the semiconductor cluster, and set out to strengthen cooperation between the two organizations.
Key officials from both sides, including Mayor Min Hyung-bae and Kim Jae-gun, Vice President of KEPCO’s Power System Division, attended the business sharing meeting held on this day. They intensively reviewed power supply plans for the semiconductor cluster, power infrastructure construction plans including the expansion of transmission and substation facilities, and the power supply response system for the summer, and discussed specific cooperation measures.
Both organizations shared a deep consensus that stable power supply and preemptive expansion of the power grid are essential for the timely establishment of the semiconductor cluster.
Accordingly, they agreed to actively cooperate in building an energy foundation to drive future high-tech industries, such as artificial intelligence (AI) and semiconductors, leveraging the abundant renewable energy and high power supply capabilities possessed by the integrated special city.
During the meeting, KEPCO shared the current status of power infrastructure construction, including phased power supply plans tailored to semiconductor production schedules and plans to expand transmission and substation facilities. In addition, they provided a detailed explanation of power supply management measures to prepare for summer heatwaves, facility safety inspections, and the operation of the emergency response system.
Mayor Min Hyung-bae emphasized, “Samsung and SK plan to invest a total of 800 trillion won in the Honam region to establish four semiconductor fabs,” adding, “Amidst a fierce race against time, KEPCO’s stable power supply is a key challenge that will determine the success or failure of this project.”
He continued, “The first task of the Integrated Special City is to make the semiconductor cluster a success,” expressing his firm determination. “We will establish a working-level hotline with KEPCO and, based on a solid ‘one-team’ cooperation system, we will definitely produce tangible results within the term of the Lee Jae-myung administration.”
Finally, Mayor Min added, “Visiting KEPCO first after taking office is an expression of my determination to create future growth engines for the Integrated Special City together with KEPCO, the center of Korea’s energy industry.” He continued, “By combining the Integrated Special City’s renewable energy competitiveness with KEPCO’s unrivaled technological prowess and power infrastructure, we will usher in the ‘Southwest Semiconductor Era’ and together complete a region-led growth model that leads the great industrial transformation of Korea.”
