Min Hyung-bae, Mayor-elect of the Integrated Jeonnam-Gwangju City, Makes First Move to ‘Naju Innovation City and KENTECH’… Initiating Co-prosperity and Future Industries

Visited KENTECH Immediately After Receiving Certificate of Election on the 4th… Expressed Commitment to Realizing the ‘Energy Capital of Korea’ - Intensive Discussions Held on Attracting Global Companies Combining AI and Renewable Energy and Establishing RE100 Industrial Complexes

(Break News Gwangju·Jeonnam) Reporter Lee Hak-su = Min Hyung-bae, who was elected as the first Mayor of the Integrated Jeonnam-Gwangju Special City in the 9th National Simultaneous Local Elections, has embarked on full-scale integration efforts by visiting Naju Bitgaram Innovation City as his first official schedule following his election.

Immediately after attending the certificate presentation ceremony held at the Gwangju Metropolitan City Election Commission on the afternoon of the 4th and receiving his certificate, Mayor-elect Min Hyung-bae visited the Korea Institute of Energy Engineering (KENTECH), located in Naju, as his first destination.

This visit fulfills the promise made by President-elect Min during the recent primary TV debate, where he pledged to visit Naju Bitgaram Innovation City as his first official schedule after his election. Naju Bitgaram Innovation City is a location that President-elect Min has long cited as a representative achievement of mutual growth and cooperation between Jeonnam and Gwangju, as well as a key hub symbolizing the future vision of the integrated special city set to launch on July 1.

Referring to Bitgaram Innovation City, President-elect Min has consistently emphasized that it is "a prime example of mutual growth where the decision by Jeonnam and Gwangju to establish a joint innovation city led to the relocation of Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) and the establishment of KENTEC," adding that it is "a space that demonstrates how integration and cooperation can transform the future of a region."

At the "Korea Energy Capital & Global Enterprise Attraction Policy Roundtable" held at KENTEC on this day, President-elect Min presented the industrial development strategy and direction for attracting global companies for the Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City. Furthermore, he engaged in in-depth discussions with energy experts regarding the construction of the regional power grid and plans to foster new energy industries. In particular, Mayor-elect Min concretized his vision to realize a global "Energy Capital"—going beyond Korea—by organically combining Jeonnam’s abundant renewable energy infrastructure with Gwangju’s AI and cutting-edge new technologies.

To this end, the meeting focused on reviewing plans to introduce "100-won electricity," establish a regionally specialized power grid based on Medium Voltage Direct Current (MVDC), create an industrial complex dedicated to RE100 initiatives, and attract global companies and key future industries such as AI, semiconductors, and data centers.

A local political insider commented, "The fact that the first mayor-elect of the unified city chose Naju’s Innovation City and KINTEX, an education and research hub in Jeonnam, as his first destination instead of Gwangju, sends a strong message that he intends to achieve substantive industrial and economic integration beyond mere emotional integration." The insider added, "The creation of synergy by combining Jeonnam’s resources with Gwangju’s technology will determine the soft landing of the unified special city."
