Min Hyung-bae, Mayor of Gwangju, Jeonnam, Inspects K-Water Site… "No Issues with Water Supply for Semiconductor Mega-Project"

Preemptive Inspection of Summer Domestic Water Supply and Drought/Flood Response Systems - "Abundant Water Reserves Remaining from Past Neglect Are a Key Competitive Advantage for Attracting Semiconductor Fabs to the Southwest Region" - Green Light for Securing Over 650,000 cubic meters per day through Dongbok Dam Heightening and Wastewater Reuse

(Break News Jeonnam Gwangju) Reporter Lee Hak-su = Min Hyung-bae, Mayor of the Integrated Special City of Gwangju, Jeonnam, set out to inspect water resource infrastructure for the successful implementation of the Southwest Semiconductor Mega-Project.

On the 2nd, Mayor Min visited the Yeongsangang and Seomjin River Basin Headquarters of the Korea Water Resources Corporation (K-Water) to inspect the current status of securing domestic water for the summer and the drought/flood response systems. He also held intensive discussions on measures for a stable water supply in preparation for the semiconductor fabs to be established in the future.

This on-site inspection was organized to dispel concerns regarding a shortage of industrial water raised by some following the recent announcements of semiconductor investment plans by Samsung and SK in the Honam region, and to preemptively lay the groundwork for attracting large-scale high-tech industrial complexes.

According to the inspection results, securing dam reservoirs to prepare for drought and inspecting key facilities for flood preparedness are proceeding without setbacks. It was confirmed that sufficient water capacity has been secured to fully support future semiconductor mega-projects as well as to supply domestic water during the summer.

Currently, the Korea Water Resources Corporation (K-water) supplies 580 million cubic meters of domestic and industrial water annually to 26 cities and counties in Jeonnam and Jeonbuk provinces and three national industrial complexes through the regional water supply system. The Waterworks Headquarters supplies 500,000 cubic meters per day to the Gwangju region and 1.29 million cubic meters per day to 22 cities and counties in Jeonnam province. Mayor Min Hyung-bae emphasized, “As Jeonnam-Gwangju Special City was relatively marginalized during the past industrialization process, it has paradoxically come to possess ‘abundant, unused water reserves.’ This is the core competitive advantage of the Southwest Semiconductor Mega-Project, which can stably support large-scale high-tech industries.”

In fact, according to an announcement by the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment on the 30th of last month, the Gwangju and Jeonnam regions have the capacity to stably supply an additional total of 650,000 cubic meters of water per day, including 300,000 cubic meters per day from Dongbok Dam, 150,000 cubic meters per day from the surplus of Juam Dam and Jangheung Dam, 100,000 cubic meters per day from Boseonggang Dam, and 100,000 cubic meters per day from Naju Dam.

The city is making multifaceted efforts to further solidify its water supply system. The Waterworks Headquarters is actively participating in the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment’s basic planning service to secure an additional 300,000 tons of water per day by raising the height of Dongbok Dam, and plans to proceed with a preliminary feasibility study to review technical safety and water resource allocation efficiency. In addition, the abundant treated wastewater from the No. 1 Wastewater Treatment Plant (600,000 m³/day) and No. 2 Wastewater Treatment Plant (120,000 m³/day) currently operating in the Gwangju region is expected to serve as a strong alternative in terms of water diversification, as there is a high possibility that it will be utilized as a source of ‘reused water,’ which is essential for future semiconductor microfabrication processes.

Min Hyung-bae, Mayor of Jeonnam-Gwangju, stated, “I will cooperate closely with relevant agencies to make the national semiconductor mega-project an overwhelming growth engine for the region,” adding, “We will establish a stable water supply system to push forward with related projects at a rapid pace.”
