Korea Expressway Corporation Chungbuk Headquarters Launches 'Rest & Recharge Project' to Prevent Fatal Truck Accidents on Expressways

The Korea Expressway Corporation Chungbuk Headquarters has launched an all-out effort to prevent accidents and urged drivers to exercise special caution, following a recent analysis of expressway traffic accident statistics in its jurisdiction which revealed a high proportion of fatal accidents caused by cargo trucks. Over the past three years, cargo truck accidents accounted for 37 deaths, or 54% of all traffic fatalities on expressways within Chungbuk. This year alone, 5 out of 13 total fatalities (38%) were attributed to cargo truck accidents. In particular, as drowsy driving and inattention to the road ahead were identified as the primary causes, ensuring sufficient rest for long-distance drivers has emerged as a key task for accident prevention.

Accordingly, the Chungbuk Headquarters is conducting various preventive activities in cooperation with relevant agencies to alleviate driver fatigue and raise safety awareness. Notably, in partnership with the Korea Transportation Safety Authority, the "Cargo Truck & Chartered Bus Rest & Recharge Project Season 3" is currently underway from April through this coming November. Considering the geographical characteristics of the Chungcheong region, where long-distance travel is frequent, this project encourages drivers to take sufficient rest by offering prizes to those who install a mobile app and verify that they have rested for at least 15 minutes at highway rest areas or designated rest stops.

At the same time, joint on-site enforcement and guidance activities regarding violations by cargo trucks are being intensified in collaboration with the Highway Patrol and the Korea Transportation Safety Authority. They are visiting logistics centers and cargo and bus companies to attach "Wake-Up Big Eyes" reflective stickers to prevent rear-end collisions, while also conducting traffic accident prevention education for prospective and existing drivers in conjunction with driver's license testing centers.

Lim Jong-taek, Head of the Chungbuk Regional Headquarters of the Korea Expressway Corporation, emphasized that given the high risk that cargo truck accidents can lead directly to major disasters, it is paramount for drivers to keep their eyes on the road ahead and take breaks. He also stated that they will continue to cooperate closely with relevant agencies to do their utmost to create an environment where highways can be used safely.
