Danyang County Strengthens Status as a Global Geopark… Leaping Forward as Korea’s Representative Hub for Geological Education
**Operating Field-Oriented Professional Courses for Approx. 50 Geopark Interpreters**
Danyang County is establishing itself as a leading center for geological education in Korea by successfully operating a nationwide training program for geopark interpreters.
The county secured the "2026 Geopark Interpreter Training Program," organized by the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment and the National Geopark Office. Following the operation of the basic training course last June, the county recently completed the professional course. This training was conducted to enhance the professionalism and on-site response capabilities of prospective interpreters who will be active in national geoparks and UNESCO Global Geoparks across the country.
Approximately 50 prospective geopark interpreters from across the nation participated in this professional course. They completed specialized training encompassing both theory and practice, including geological heritage interpretation techniques, educational program operation, and field practice.
During the training period, participants engaged in field practice, personally visiting major geological sites in Danyang such as Dodam Sambong, Gosu Cave, and Seokmun. Participants examined the formation processes and geological value of each landmark and strengthened their practical capabilities by conducting hands-on interpretation practice on-site.
In addition, examples of educational programs conducted in collaboration with local residents and tourism and experience programs utilizing geological heritage were shared. The trainees reached a consensus that a geopark is a sustainable development model that connects local communities with tourism and education, going beyond mere conservation.
In line with its status as the first UNESCO World Geopark in the Chungcheong region, Danyang County plans to continuously attract nationwide interpreter training, professional development programs, student experiential learning, and academic events. Furthermore, the county intends to foster the area into an international hub for geological education by developing differentiated content that links geological sites, tourism resources, and local communities.
Son Myeong-seong, Head of the Environment Division, stated that the event was significant in that trainees directly experienced and learned about Danyang's excellent geological sites, sharing models that can be applied in the field. He added that the county will actively attract domestic and international education and training programs in the future to enhance the educational function and international standing of the geopark.
