Jeonnam, Ranked No. 1 in Namul Production, Targets Global Vegan and HMR Markets with High-Value Processed Foods

Jeonnam Agricultural Research & Extension Services Develops Large Quantity of Convenience Foods and Health Drinks Using Rapeseed, Water Celery, and Gondre; Opens Export Routes to Countries Including the U.S. and Germany, as Well as Entering Domestic Highway Rest Areas

(Naju = Break News) Reporter Lee Hak-su = Jeollanam-do's namul industry, which had previously remained limited to the distribution of raw materials despite possessing the nation's top-tier production base, is expanding its reach into the global market by incorporating cutting-edge processing technology and trendy product planning.

The Jeonnam Agricultural Research & Extension Services announced that various high-value processed namul products, developed to maximize the added value of Jeonnam-grown namul and revitalize the stagnant farm-to-consumer market, are achieving tangible results, including the expansion of domestic distribution networks and entry into overseas markets.

Currently, Jeollanam-do is the undisputed center of Korea's namul industry, ranking first in the nation for the production of Chwinamul and Water Celery, and second for the production of Gondre. However, until now, these products have primarily been distributed in the form of unprocessed raw ingredients or simply dried vegetables, which presented clear limitations in creating high added value and expanding consumption in line with the changing dietary habits of modern consumers.

In response, the Jeonnam Agricultural Research & Extension Services thoroughly analyzed the rapidly growing Home Meal Replacement (HMR) market and global vegan consumption trends, and embarked on the development of customized processed products to broaden the consumption base of Jeonnam-grown vegetables and pioneer new markets. The result of this effort is a total of five innovative product lines: frozen rapeseed greens, frozen vegetable rice, instant vegetable soybean paste soup, instant vegetable japchae, and vegetable gochujang rice cake mix.

These products are strictly focused on the cooking convenience of modern people. The 'frozen rapeseed greens' feature a specially developed seasoning that allows them to be eaten immediately after thawing without any additional cooking, while the 'frozen vegetable rice' was developed as a fried rice product using less sticky long-grain rice to target the global market, thereby enhancing distribution convenience. The 'Instant Vegetable Doenjang Soup' and 'Vegetable Japchae' utilize freeze-drying technology to preserve the authentic taste and texture of freshly cooked dishes simply by adding hot water. Similarly, the 'Vegetable Gochujang Rice Cake Mix' adopts a convenient processing method where preparation is completed by simply adding water to the powder and frying.

In particular, the five types of convenience foods developed this time were designed as 'vegan products' that completely exclude animal-derived ingredients, allowing even strict vegetarians to consume them with peace of mind. Furthermore, they are evaluated as having secured both marketability and distribution stability by establishing a systematic manufacturing process that enables long-term distribution in both room temperature and frozen states.

The Jeonnam Agricultural Research & Extension Services has not stopped at convenience foods tailored for single-person households but has also accelerated the development of health and functional products aligned with the aging society and well-being trends. The ‘Sulfur Minari Juice,’ a blend of Jeonnam’s representative specialties—minari (water celery) and pear—in a golden ratio, utilizes a cold-pressing method without any artificial additives. This minimizes the loss of nutrients in heat-sensitive minari and pear while preserving their unique flavors. Additionally, by developing the ‘Safflower Sprout Protein Shake’—which utilizes the potentially unfamiliar safflower sprout to supplement the protein essential for modern people—the company has established a foothold for entering the rapidly growing market for age-friendly and senior foods.

Based on this technological prowess, the commercially successful instant vegetable soybean paste soup, instant vegetable japchae, and Sulfur Minari Juice have achieved the remarkable feat of being successfully exported to global markets, including the U.S. and Germany, after passing stringent overseas quarantine standards, in addition to being sold in domestic online and offline markets. As traditional Korean cuisine gains global attention as a healthy food, processed vegetable products from Jeonnam are emerging as the new leading players of ‘K-Food.’

The expansion of distribution networks to broaden contact points with domestic consumers is also set to begin in earnest. The Jeonnam Agricultural Research & Extension Services recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Gwangju-Jeonnam Regional Headquarters of the Korea Expressway Corporation to promote the consumption of agricultural products from Jeonnam.

Based on this agreement, the plan is to prioritize the placement of processed wild vegetable products from Jeonnam in stores within expressway rest areas in the Gwangju-Jeonnam region to introduce them to travelers. This is expected to serve as an "antenna shop" that goes beyond simple sales to widely promote the excellence of Jeonnam agricultural products to the public.
