Gwangju City Launches ‘Global SDG Education’ Program for Mudeungsan Geopark
Jointly Developed with China, Vietnam, and Others… Spreading Values for Implementing the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) – Participatory Learning Programs for Elementary Students to Adults, “Presenting a New Model for Global Cooperation”
(Gwangju = Break News) Reporter Lee Hak-su = Gwangju Metropolitan City will begin operating the ‘Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Education Program’ (pictured) this month to promote the value of the Mudeungsan UNESCO Geopark and address common challenges facing the international community.
This program was established to fulfill the recommendation to ‘expand SDGs education’ made during the UNESCO Geopark recertification review in 2022. It holds particular significance as an ‘international joint education program’ developed in close cooperation with overseas Geoparks, including those in China and Vietnam.
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the core of this education, are international goals adopted at the UN General Assembly in 2015. They consist of 17 key tasks to be achieved by 2030, covering areas such as poverty, the environment, education, and climate change.
Gwangju City has structured the curriculum to make this concept, which students might find somewhat vague, easier to understand by integrating it with practical examples from its World Geopark. The textbook contains detailed information on the concept of a Geopark, the value of the Mudeungsan World Geopark, and the significance of each of the 17 SDG goals.
Participatory elements have also been introduced to maximize learning effectiveness, moving away from rote memorization. Students engage in sticker activities to increase their interest, and after theoretical lessons, they share their opinions on the goals they consider important through group discussions and presentations. Through this, it is expected that students will develop integrated thinking skills that encompass the environment, society, and economy.
This program is open to anyone from fourth graders to adults and operates year-round for groups of 15 or more people. Groups wishing to participate can make a reservation by phone through the Geopark Team at the Gwangju City Arboretum and Garden Business Office.
