Gwangju City Begins Payment of 600,000 Won ‘2026 Farmers’ Public Benefit Allowance’… Until May 29

Targeting a total of 8,459 farming households, paid once a year via Gwangju Prepaid Cards - Expiration date shortened to the end of this year to revitalize the local economy - Integrated and expanded into the ‘Jeonnam Gwangju Metropolitan City Farmers and Fishermen’s Public Benefit Allowance’ starting in 2027

(Gwangju = Break News) Reporter Lee Hak-su = Gwangju Metropolitan City is officially beginning the payment of the ‘2026 Farmers’ Public Benefit Allowance’ to maintain the public value of agriculture and promote management stability for farming households.

Gwangju City announced that it will pay an annual allowance of 600,000 won per household via Gwangju Prepaid Cards from April 27 to May 29 to the final 8,459 farming households that have completed eligibility verification following applications received since February.

Eligible recipients can receive the allowance by visiting the administrative welfare center in their jurisdiction with their identification card. Eligibility applies to heads of agricultural businesses (including livestock and insect farming) who have maintained their address and agricultural management information in Gwangju City since prior to January 1, 2025, and who have received the Basic Direct Payment in the previous year and are currently engaged in actual farming.

Notably, the card usage period has been shortened this year compared to previous years to induce a virtuous cycle in the local economy and to efficiently manage unused balances. Both the 2026 allowance being distributed now and the 2025 allowance, which was granted a two-year term, can only be used until December 31 of this year. Recipients are advised to exercise special caution, as any unused balance within the deadline will be fully recovered.

The Farmers' Public Interest Allowance is part of the "Three Major Public Value Allowances," a key campaign pledge of Mayor Kang Ki-jung during his 8th term, and was introduced in 2023 for the first time at the metropolitan city level. Since its introduction, a total of 19.41 billion won has been provided to 32,352 farm households up to this year, serving as an economic pillar for local farmers.

Furthermore, in line with the official launch of the "Jeonnam-Gwangju Special City" scheduled for July 1, the program is set to be integrated and operated as the "Jeonnam-Gwangju Special City Farmers and Fishermen Public Benefit Allowance" starting in 2027, bridging the gap with Jeollanam-do. The plan is to resolve equity issues raised due to differences in payment rates and criteria, while expanding the scope of beneficiaries.

Bae Gwi-suk, Head of the Agriculture and Animal Policy Division of Gwangju City, stated, "With the launch of Jeonnam-Gwangju Special City, we will do our utmost to provide administrative support to resolve the grievances felt by local farmers and ensure that the public benefit allowance serves as a catalyst for revitalizing the local economy as well as stabilizing farm management."
