37 Civic and Youth Groups in Gwangju Issue Open Inquiry to Mayor Kang Ki-jung Regarding 'Jeong Yul-seong Project and Panda Attraction'
"Are you trying to trade the values of liberal democracy for Chinese bears?" Strongly condemned... 7-Point Open Inquiry Submitted
(Gwangju = Break News) Reporter Lee Hak-su = 37 civic and youth groups in the Gwangju region, including the Pan-Citizens' Alliance for the Abolition of the Jeong Yul-seong Park Construction, Friends of the Honam Right, Honam Freedom Forum, National Alliance for the Defense of the Nation, and the National Professors' Group for Social Justice, have strongly criticized Gwangju Mayor Kang Ki-jung, who recently returned from a visit to China, accusing him of attempting to trade the Jeong Yul-seong memorial project for an attempt to attract Chinese pandas.
These groups held a press conference at the lawn plaza of Gwangju City Hall on the 16th, announced an open inquiry addressed to Mayor Kang, and officially submitted it to the City Hall Civil Affairs Office. Prior to submitting their public inquiry, the groups issued a statement asserting, “We view Mayor Kang Ki-jung and Nam-gu District Head Kim Byung-nae’s recent visit to China as an attempt to trade the restoration of the bust of Jeong Yul-seong—which the Chinese Ambassador to Korea and the Chinese Consul General in Gwangju have been demanding since last year—and the ‘Jeong Yul-seong History Park Construction Project,’ which Gwangju City had been pursuing but temporarily suspended, for the attraction of Chinese pandas.”
They further strongly condemned Mayor Kang Ki-jung, calling it “an absurd scheme to exchange the absolute value of the Republic of Korea’s ‘liberal democracy’ for a single Chinese bear.”
The public inquiry letter delivered to Gwangju City by civic and youth groups on this day contained seven specific demands.
The key points of the public inquiry include: ▲ the disclosure of detailed information regarding consultations with the Chinese government and the bereaved family (daughter) of Jeong Yul-seong during the visit to China; ▲ the reason for continuing the memorial project for the communist Jeong Yul-seong despite public opposition; ▲ the true nature of "Jeong Yul-seong's music and spirit" as perceived by Mayor Kang Ki-jung; ▲ whether the bereaved family is aware of the public opposition to the Jeong Yul-seong memorial project within South Korea; ▲ future plans for utilizing Jeong Yul-seong-related materials donated by China; ▲ whether there are unreasonable plans to push forward with the temporarily suspended "Jeong Yul-seong History Park Construction Project"; and ▲ the disclosure of objective data regarding the influx of Chinese tourists and the revitalization of the local economy following the implementation of the Jeong Yul-seong memorial project.
An official from the group emphasized, "We will thoroughly monitor the movements of the Mayor and the city regarding the Jeong Yul-seong memorial project until June 30, when Mayor Kang Ki-jung's term concludes," adding, "Furthermore, we will keep a close eye on how Min Hyung-bae, the Mayor of the Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City who takes office on July 1, handles this project," signaling a continued joint response.
Meanwhile, as Gwangju City has not yet released an official statement regarding the public inquiry from these groups, the ideological conflict and controversy within the region surrounding the Jeong Yul-seong project at the end of the term are expected to continue for the time being.
