An ordinance bill aimed at reducing the toll burden on Gyeongnam residents for the Machang Bridge failed to pass the standing committee of the Gyeongnam Provincial Council. This decision was based on the judgment that the scope of support, financial savings, and the establishment of a reduction system needed to be reviewed more thoroughly.

On the 7th, the Construction and Firefighting Committee of the Gyeongnam Provincial Council postponed the review of the "Gyeongsangnam-do Machang Bridge Toll Support Ordinance Bill" submitted by the Gyeongnam Provincial Government during the first meeting of the 436th Regular Session.

The bill establishes a basis for providing partial toll support to residents who are registered and actually reside in Gyeongnam, as well as to vehicles owned by corporations within the province.

During the review, the reliability of the cost estimates became a key issue. Council Member Jeong Hee-seong questioned the appropriateness of the estimated annual financial savings of 4.2 billion won, noting that the scale of savings could vary depending on traffic volume.

Council Member Park Hae-young inspected the readiness for the actual implementation of the toll reduction, including the vehicle license plate recognition and management system. The meeting also addressed the crackdown on overloaded vehicles on the Machang Bridge and the maintenance costs that Changwon City will have to bear after 2038.

Chairman Jeong Sang-hak stated, “What provincial residents want is a substantial alleviation of the toll burden,” and ordered the concretization of additional reduction measures and the improvement of the system to ensure that eligible recipients do not miss out on benefits due to reasons such as omitted vehicle registrations.

During the supplementary budget review on this day, local bonds being used for the recovery from the heavy rainfall in Geoje and Tongyeong and for disaster prevention projects also came under scrutiny.

Assemblyman Park Bong-hwi inspected the execution of emergency recovery funds and follow-up recovery plans to ensure that the housing and livelihoods of affected residents can be restored before Chuseok, while Assemblyman Kwon Dae-geun pointed out the issue of predictable financial demands being reflected in the supplementary budget belatedly.

Assemblyman Lee Jong-ho called for cooperation among cities and counties to prevent delays in disaster prevention projects. Chairman Jeong demanded that the feasibility of execution within the year and the progress of each project be thoroughly managed to ensure that projects funded by local bonds are not carried over or left unused. The Construction and Firefighting Committee passed three ordinance bills and one proposal to the government in their original form, excluding the ordinance bill for supporting tolls on the Machang Bridge.
