Gyeongnam Province Launches Intensive Crackdown on Illegal Vehicles… Clearing Out "Ghost Cars" and Illegally Modified Vehicles

Joint crackdown across the province for 5 weeks starting June 8… Strengthening traffic safety and preventing social crimes

Gyeongnam Province is launching an intensive crackdown on illegal vehicles to ensure traffic safety and establish order in vehicle operation.

Gyeongsangnam Province announced that it will conduct the "2026 First Half Unified Crackdown and Clearing Out of Illegal Vehicles" across the entire province for five weeks, from June 8 to July 10.

This crackdown is being carried out in cooperation with relevant agencies, including the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, local governments, the National Police Agency, and the Korea Transportation Safety Authority, with the aim of preventing safety accidents and social problems caused by illegal vehicles.

The main targets of the crackdown are vehicles abandoned for long periods on roads and in residential areas, vehicles registered under the names of foreigners who have permanently left the country, and so-called "ghost cars" (vehicles driven without a transfer of ownership). In addition, vehicles with illegal modifications, such as muffler alterations, vehicles violating safety standards, vehicles with obscured, damaged, or contaminated license plates, and unregistered motorcycles will also be included in the intensive inspections.

Gyeongnam Province plans to enhance enforcement effectiveness by establishing a continuous crackdown system through the operation of dedicated task forces in each city and county, and by conducting joint crackdowns involving the police and the Korea Transportation Safety Authority.

In particular, given that illegal vehicles not only increase the risk of traffic accidents but also pose a potential threat to various crimes, the province intends to use this crackdown to create a safe traffic environment and establish social order.

Along with the crackdown, the province plans to conduct promotional activities using electronic billboards and banners to encourage vehicle owners to voluntarily comply with regulations and foster a proper driving culture.

Park Seong-jun, Director General of the Transportation and Construction Bureau of Gyeongnam Province, stated, "Illegal vehicles are a factor that threatens not only traffic safety but also the social safety net," adding, "We will do our utmost in continuous enforcement and management to create a traffic environment where residents can feel safe."
