Gyeongnam Office of Education Operates Commuting Safety Councils in 18 Support Offices

Collaboration among Schools, Local Governments, and Police… 77 Tasks for Improving School Routes

The Gyeongnam Office of Education has formed commuting safety councils in each of the 18 support offices within the province to create safe routes for students commuting to and from school, and has set out to improve risk factors on school routes.

The commuting safety council is a cooperative system involving the Office of Education, local governments, the police, and schools to jointly identify and resolve regional commuting safety issues. It is being operated to respond to changes in the traffic environment around schools resulting from the recent increase in vehicles and the spread of personal mobility devices (PMs).

The Gyeongnam Office of Education has completed the formation of councils in each support office and selected 77 key improvement tasks, such as resolving illegal parking and maintaining school routes, reflecting the commuting conditions of each school.

Since last July, each support office has been conducting joint on-site inspections with relevant agencies targeting dangerous sections around schools, and is implementing improvement measures within their respective areas of responsibility based on the inspection results. Key projects include expanding smart traffic safety facilities, improving illegal parking around schools, and maintaining pedestrian walkways and safety facilities. The Provincial Office of Education plans to swiftly implement these improvement tasks through collaboration among relevant agencies.

In addition, the office plans to expand traffic safety education for students and parents, and, in cooperation with transportation associations, promote campaigns to spread a pedestrian-centered traffic safety culture, such as "stop when turning right and look for pedestrians first."

Yang Mi, Head of the Safety Management Division at the Gyeongnam Provincial Office of Education, stated, "Close cooperation among relevant agencies is paramount for school commuting safety," adding, "We will actively support the creation of a safe commuting environment tailored to local conditions."
