Tea Culture Event Capturing the Scent of Gaya to be Held at Surungwon Park in Gimhae
‘Gaya Tea Culture Festival’ from April 30 to May 3
A tea culture event capturing the essence of Gaya will be held at Surungwon Park in Gimhae.
Gimhae City announced that the ‘Gaya Tea Culture Festival,’ themed around Janggun Tea—the region’s representative tea—will take place at Surungwon Park from April 30 to May 3.
This event is hosted and organized by the Gaya Tea Association and will be held in conjunction with the Gaya Culture Festival.
During the event, tastings of the four major famous teas, including fermented tea and green tea, will be offered, along with tea ceremony experience programs that citizens can participate in directly.
A key feature of the event is its structure, designed to allow easy access to tea culture in everyday life.
In particular, a demonstration of the Royal Court Tea Ceremony, themed around Queen Heo, will be held on the main stage at 3:00 PM on May 1. Jangguncha is said to have originated from tea seeds brought from India by Queen Heo in 48 AD, and its symbolic significance is so great that the Korea Tea Association declared her the "No. 1 Tea Master of the Republic of Korea" in 2007.
The demonstration will proceed with the King, Queen, guests, and attendants dressed in traditional attire sharing tea according to established etiquette, aiming to convey both the historical significance of Gaya and the formality of traditional tea culture to the audience.
This event, marking its 18th anniversary this year, aims to promote Gimhae as the birthplace of Jangguncha through experience- and tourism-centered programs, and to contribute to the spread of tea culture and the revitalization of local tourism.
Meanwhile, "Jangguncha" is the name given by King Chungnyeol of Goryeo, who highly praised the taste and aroma of the tea from Geumganggok in Gimhae; this record is found in the *Sinjeung Dongguk Yeoji Seungnam*, a geographical treatise from the Joseon Dynasty. Jangguncha, a large-leaf variety of southern origin, is known for its deep and clean flavor and has received recognition for its quality both domestically and internationally, including winning the top prize at the 2008 International Tea Competition.
A city official stated, "We hope this event will serve as an opportunity for citizens to experience tea culture up close."
