Shinsegae Group Chairman Chung Yong-jin on Tuesday apologized over the controversy surrounding Starbucks Korea’s recent marketing campaign.
“I take very seriously the fact that many people felt deep pain and anger due to Starbucks Korea’s inappropriate marketing,” Chung said.
After individually mentioning the bereaved families of the victims of the May 18 Gwangju Democratization Movement, the family of democracy activist Park Jong-chul, citizens of Gwangju, and the Korean public, Chung said that “regardless of the reason, causing pain to the hearts of the people is not a light responsibility.”
“I will make no excuses whatsoever. All responsibility for this matter lies with me. It is my fault,” he said.
The apology came eight days after Starbucks, operated by SCK Company Co., a subsidiary of Shinsegae Group, sparked controversy by holding the Tank Day event on May 18, the anniversary of the Gwangju Uprising. It marked the company’s second apology following a public statement issued on May 19.
This is also the first time Chung personally appeared before the public to deliver an apology statement since becoming chairman in March 2024.
Starbucks Korea launched a Tank Day campaign promoting a “tank” tumbler. It drew criticism over its timing, which coincided with the May 18 Democratization Movement anniversary.
Appearing solemn, Chung read his statement for about five minutes and bowed several times during the apology.
“We will fundamentally review our internal systems and risk management framework, and raise our standards for social responsibility,” Chung said, adding that the conglomerate is committed to internal reforms.
“All members of Shinsegae Group, including myself, will remember the history and sacrifices of our society, and will always strive to deeply understand and respect the hearts of the people,” he added.
