Dr. Kim Ji-yeon, director of the Spine Center at Seran General Hospital, successfully performed the world’s first cadaver live surgery demonstration of biportal endoscopic cervical laminoplasty at the 2026 World Congress of Unilateral Biportal Endoscopic Spine Surgery (WUBES 2026), held on May 4 at Omnibus Park in the Catholic University of Korea Seoul St. Mary's Hospital.
The WUBES (World UBE Society) is a globally renowned and authoritative academic organization in the field of Unilateral Biportal Endoscopy (UBE), bringing together leading spine specialists and surgeons from the United States, Europe, Latin America, and Asia to share the latest surgical techniques and clinical research findings, the hospital said Thursday.

A cadaver live surgery demonstration is considered one of the highest-level forms of surgical presentation, as it involves performing the entire procedure in real time using actual human cadaveric tissue while spine experts from around the world observe and evaluate the technique.
Biportal endoscopic cervical laminoplasty was developed and advanced by Dr. Kim. The cadaver live demonstration carried particular significance as it officially demonstrated to the international academic community that endoscopic spine surgery can be safely and effectively expanded beyond lumbar procedures into highly complex cervical spine surgery.
“Biportal endoscopic cervical laminoplasty was designed to provide patients with multilevel cervical myelopathy a safe and effective treatment option without the burden of major surgery,” Dr. Kim said. “It is a tremendous honor to present this technique in the most rigorous format of a cadaver live surgery demonstration at WUBES, the world’s leading academic society for biportal endoscopy.”
Kim added, “Biportal endoscopic cervical laminoplasty has now established itself as one of the standard techniques in the global field of biportal endoscopy, with its safety and efficacy officially recognized by leading international experts. This achievement also lays the groundwork for spine specialists worldwide to learn and disseminate the procedure as a standard surgical model.”
