[Science Column by Star Uncle] Reading the Future of AI from the Blank Sp...

[Columnist Lee Youngung, Korea Lecturer News] 1. A Unique Window in a Black-and-White World: The Gentle Imagination Taught by ‘Full-Color Maps’

In the 1960s, during my childhood, South Korea was a world dominated by monochrome simplicity. Television was a rarity, and most books on my shelf were printed on coarse, greyish recycled paper. In that barren environment, the only treasure that offered me a brilliant "full-color" world was, without a doubt, the atlas. Since maps were the only things printed in color back then, I would open that atlas every day and embark on imaginary journeys for hours, losing track of time.

As I traced the winding borderlines with my fingertips, I felt as if I could smell the scent of the blue ocean. Looking at the colors that shifted according to the elevation of the terrain, I guessed the temperature of the wind. Reading the tiny statistical tables at the bottom of the pages, I asked myself countless questions: “What kind of dreams do the people living by this rugged mountain range have when they fall asleep?” For me, a map was not just a record of information; it was a gentle friend that soothed a young boy’s loneliness and allowed him to dream of an infinite world.

2. The Power of Pattern Recognition: The ‘Star of the Moment’ Connecting Maps to Space, and Space to AI

The tenacity I developed back then—finding hidden patterns among map symbols and figures and inferring invisible connections—became the most reliable lantern when I later became an astronomer. This is because the night sky seen through a telescope is, in the end, no different from a giant "Map of the Universe." Locating external galaxies hundreds of millions of light-years away and reading the flow of dark matter were ultimately the results of expanding the curiosity of that young boy who once sought patterns on a paper map.

During my decades as an astronomer, I did not merely measure the brightness of stars. I sought to understand the providence of the universe by fusing physics, philosophy, and humanistic imagination. In that process, I experienced ‘Sternestunde(starry moment)’—flashes of insight where two seemingly unrelated concepts suddenly embraced each other in my mind. Creativity is born at the very junction where these disparate fields meet.

Recently, I sat down at my desk again to face the great civilizational turning point called Artificial Intelligence (AI). While studying the essence of deep learning - 'pattern recognition' - and 'prompt engineering,' I felt a thrilling surge of excitement. The eyes of the boy who analyzed the atlas 60 years ago were still sparkling within me as I refined the best questions to ask AI today.

3. Virtues of Humanity We Must Not Lose in the AI Era

My heart feels a bit heavy when I think of the young people who are now setting sail into the rough waves of society. I deeply empathize with the sense of helplessness you may feel in this era where everything changes rapidly and AI generates knowledge on your behalf. However, looking at the 2026 Future Job Skills data from the World Economic Forum (WEF), the path we must take is clear. As technology becomes more sophisticated, the ultimate competitive edge lies in the 'most human-like power.'

First, ‘Analytical Intelligence’ that reads warm context from cold data (69%): Analytical thinking, which reads the hidden meaning within information rather than just listing it, is the top priority. We need a warm intelligence that judges whether the answers provided by AI hurt someone or whether this system truly benefits our society.

Second, ‘Strategic Leadership’ and ‘Resilience’ that hold hands together (67%): AI never gets tired, but it cannot comfort the heart of a hurting colleague. Exercising influence toward people and the flexibility and strength to stand up again after drinking from the bitter cup of failure are great engines that only humans possess.

Third, ‘Human-Centric Creativity’ that asks questions beyond the correct answer (57%): The core of prompt engineering is not technology, but the 'quality of the question.' A single question asked with a heart that pierces the essence of things and empathizes can change the world. Never forget the attitude of lifelong learning with curious eyes.

Fourth, ‘Stewardship’ and ‘Execution’ that care for the community (41%): Attention to detail and ethical responsibility act as brakes to prevent technology from running out of control. The heart that protects the environment and feels responsibility as a global citizen is the most noble finishing touch to success.

4. Your Questions Will Soon Become the Stars That Light Up the Future

Young friends, the blank spaces on a map are not a homework assignment to be filled, but a space of freedom where you can fully unfold your imagination. Do not view AI as a fearsome competitor. Just as I dreamed of the world while looking at an atlas, I sincerely hope you become the protagonists who use AI as a tool to venture into a wider universe.

Creativity is intelligence having fun. Rather than blaming yourself while being buried in technology, let your curiosity run wild in the playground of AI. If you do not lose your inherent human empathy and integrative attitude, the AI era will become a stage that makes your life shine most brilliantly.

The stars in the night sky become a part of cosmic history only when someone gazes at them and asks questions. I do not doubt that every sincere question you ask today will become a dazzling star that lights the way for someone else in the distant future. I hope the blessings of the universe are with you in every step you take.
