Kolmar Korea deploys robotic automation in cosmetic preservation testing,...

Kolmar Korea said Thursday it has introduced a robot-based automated system for cosmetic preservation testing -- the first of its kind in Korea. The move is a proactive investment aimed at meeting rapidly growing demand for product safety verification driven by the global expansion of K-beauty, while also improving analytical accuracy.

Preservation testing evaluates how well a cosmetic product remains protected from microorganisms such as bacteria and mold. It ensures that products do not deteriorate or become contaminated under typical consumer use conditions and is a required safety verification process to comply with cosmetic regulations in the U.S. (MoCRA, OTC) and Europe (CPNP).

Following the introduction of the automation system, testing capacity has improved significantly. With robots handling repetitive processes, processing speed has increased 2.5-fold, and the throughput of microbial response verification has risen by about 50 percent. The system also enables unmanned nighttime operation. As a result, the company expects to reduce reliance on external testing institutions by up to 80 percent annually, while improving both the speed and accuracy of regulatory test reporting.

Kolmar Korea plans to gradually expand the application of robotics and AI in cosmetic preservation testing. It aims to build a system in which AI analyzes test sample data collected by robots and to establish a “physical AI”-based environment integrating robotics and AI. As part of a project led by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, the company is developing a program in which AI analyzes the final results of preservation tests.

A Kolmar Korea official said, “With the introduction of this automation system, we can now respond more quickly and reliably to testing demands from clients targeting the global market,” adding, “We will continue to expand our robotics- and AI-based research environment to enhance the safety and competitiveness of K-beauty products.”

Meanwhile, in November last year, Kolmar Korea was selected as the only cosmetic company to serve as the lead organization in the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy’s “AI Factory Alliance” project. The company plans to develop an autonomous system that optimizes all processes  -- from production planning and manufacturing to quality control and filling and packaging -- based on AI.
