Incheon National University has launched a new marine and fisheries research institute aimed at positioning Korea's western coast as a hub for advanced maritime industries.

The university held an unveiling ceremony for a plaque for the Institute of Marine and Fisheries Industry on May 11, followed by a launch symposium on Thursday attended by around 100 participants from government, academia and industry.

The initiative is intended to foster innovation in marine industries along the Yellow Sea coast by applying advanced technologies to the city’s maritime culture, while strengthening the university’s links to local development projects.

The symposium drew officials from the Incheon Metropolitan Government’s agriculture, fisheries and food bureau as well as its marine and aviation bureaus, in addition to representatives from the Incheon Port Authority, the Korea Maritime Institute and Incheon Technopark, among other institutions.

In his welcoming remarks, Incheon National University President Lee In-jae said the west coast region urgently needed an independent growth engine for the maritime industry following the relocation of the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries to Busan.

“As Incheon’s only flagship national university, we will faithfully serve as a key partner in cooperation among industry, academia, research institutions and government,” he said.

Choi Nayounghwan, head of strategic planning at the Korea Maritime Institute, delivered the symposium’s keynote speech on potential cooperation between the institute and the university’s new research center.

Subsequent presentations focused on four sectors — marine biotechnology, marine logistics, regional marine culture and marine architecture — with speakers discussing strategies to differentiate marine industries along the west coast from the shipbuilding- and shipping-centered industrial base concentrated in the Busan and South Gyeongsang region.

The university said the institute would focus on developing a localized model for the marine industry centered on Incheon’s airport and port logistics infrastructure, taking advantage of the city’s access to a metropolitan population of 26 million and advanced research in AI, robotics and biotechnology.

The university plans to establish specialized research centers within the new institute that are dedicated to marine biotechnology, marine robotics, smart marine logistics, marine leisure tourism, west coast cultural peace initiatives, community cooperation, advanced aquaculture and marine AI data.

The university said the institute would also examine the carbon-capturing potential of tidal flats along the Yellow Sea and also develop policies to improve living conditions to attract young people to Incheon’s island communities, which face population decline.

The institute is also expected to serve as a platform for broader regional and international collaboration.

The university said it plans to engage in research cooperation with institutions along Korea’s western coast while expanding partnerships with universities in China, Taiwan and elsewhere around the Yellow Sea to build a regional “knowledge network.”

The new institute’s director, Kim Gyu-won, said the launch “marks the start of Incheon National University’s efforts to establish itself not merely as a research institution, but as a leading university regarding marine governance along the western coast.”

“We will focus not only on developing new marine industries and improving governance in Incheon and the broader western coast, but also on cultivating practical, interdisciplinary talent needed by local industries in line with the university’s goal of cultivating innovative talent willing to take on creative challenges,” he added.
