145kV circuit breaker passes final approval testing

HD Hyundai Electric announced on May 3 that it has recently successfully completed the final approval test for its 145kV SF₆-Free high-voltage circuit breaker, which is scheduled to be supplied to a Swedish power company’s substation.
The SF₆-Free high-voltage circuit breaker is an eco-friendly power device that does not use SF₆ (sulfur hexafluoride), a representative fluorinated greenhouse gas. The European Union amended its F-Gas (fluorinated greenhouse gas) Regulation in 2024 and is gradually strengthening regulations on the use of fluorinated greenhouse gases, including SF₆. In particular, as the use of SF₆ in high-voltage circuit breakers exceeding 145kV is scheduled to be completely banned from 2032, HD Hyundai Electric is focusing on expanding its SF₆-Free high-voltage circuit breaker product portfolio. Currently, the company has completed the development of 72.5kV, 145kV, and 170kV products, and plans to complete the development of its entire SF₆-Free high-voltage circuit breaker product line by 2028 to begin full-scale order expansion. In particular, for the 420kV product, which has the largest potential demand in the European market, the company aims to complete development in the first half of this year.
An official from HD Hyundai Electric stated, “The SF₆-Free high-voltage circuit breaker is a high-value-added product with high technological barriers, and the completion of the final approval test for this 145kV product is a significant achievement that proves HD Hyundai Electric’s technological competitiveness. Especially with the completion of the 420kV product development ahead in the first half of this year, and with discussions on long-term supply contracts with European clients underway, we expect future expansion in orders and sales.”
Meanwhile, HD Hyundai Electric recently signed a contract to supply 145kV SF₆-Free high-voltage circuit breakers to a Finnish power company. The product is scheduled to be installed in a substation in the western region of Finland and will be delivered by July of next year.
