South Korea’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport said Monday that it has launched a special on-site inspection into missing reinforcing steel bars in the Samseong Station section of the GTX-A high-speed commuter rail project.
The ministry said the inspection will cover all construction packages involved in the Yeongdong-daero underground complex development project, which includes the GTX Samseong Station section, to review whether procedures were properly carried out throughout the construction process.
A 12-member inspection team consisting of officials from the ministry and outside experts from the Korea Infrastructure Safety & Technology Corporation, the Korea Railroad Research Institute and the Korea National Railway will conduct the monthlong review.
Depending on the findings, the ministry said it may impose penalty points, corrective orders and fines on builders, supervisors and other parties involved.
The Seoul city government said Monday that it had reported the missing main reinforcing bars in pillars at the GTX-A Samseong Station construction site to the Korea National Railway three times starting in November last year.
In an official statement, the city government said it had submitted supervisory reports containing details of the missing rebar issue on Nov. 13, Dec. 12 and Jan. 16.
