“Cannot produce AI talent due to lack of skilled personnel”… Ministry of SMEs and Startups establishes new startup package to address workforce shortage.

The Ministry of SMEs and Startups

is stepping up to support startups struggling to secure specialized AI talent. Going beyond simple recruitment assistance, it has introduced for the first time a demonstration-based startup support model that solves actual corporate issues in collaboration with AI experts.

The Ministry of SMEs and Startups

announced that it is launching the 'AI Talent Demonstration-type Startup Package Pilot Project' and will begin recruiting participating companies starting on the 18th.

This project operates by connecting startups requiring AI technology with graduates of government AI training courses, and providing commercialization funds to companies that successfully hire graduates. Eligible applicants are startups in the five major deep tech sectors, including big data and AI, robotics, bio-health, future mobility, and eco-friendly energy. The Ministry of SMEs and Startups plans to select approximately 80 companies in total. Selected companies will receive commercialization funds of up to 200 million won. The average support amount is approximately 130 million won, with differential payments based on business viability and evaluation results.

This program is differentiated from existing startup support initiatives in that it features a structure where startups directly propose AI application tasks and are matched with the talent to solve them. Participating companies must submit an "AI Talent Utilization Issue Resolution Plan." They must directly present the AI application tasks and project goals required for the product or service enhancement process, and the evaluation will be conducted based on this plan.

“AI competitiveness ultimately depends on people”… Support from talent matching to commercialization

The Ministry of SMEs and Startups plans to first select candidate companies equivalent to approximately 1.2 times the final support scale and operate a 'Matching Day' to connect them with graduates of government AI training programs. Subsequently, companies that successfully hire talent will receive priority support for initial costs of utilizing AI talent, and the remaining project funds will be disbursed after an interim evaluation assesses commercialization potential and utilization performance. Through this initiative, the government aims to encourage startups to internalize AI technology and establish a foundation for sustainable growth.

The shortage of skilled personnel has consistently been raised in the startup industry as one of the biggest challenges in securing AI technological competitiveness. In fact, according to the Software Policy Research Institute's '2024 AI Industry Survey,' startups cited the shortage of AI personnel (57.3%), along with data acquisition issues (59.5%), as major difficulties.

The Ministry of SMEs and Startups plans to alleviate the workforce mismatch problem in the field and connect it to AI-based commercialization results by directly linking graduates of government-trained AI education with startups.

Policy Officer

Cho Kyung-won

stated, “AI technology competitiveness ultimately begins with people,” adding, “Through this project, we will actively support startups by connecting them with the talent they need in a timely manner and ensuring that this leads to the advancement of products and services and commercialization results.”

Applications will be accepted until 6:00 PM on June 12. Companies wishing to participate can apply online through the K-Startup website.
