“From Typhoon Ruins to Tourist Attraction”… Geoje Maemi Castle Selected for Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism’s ‘Local 100’
Coastal fortress built by an individual over 20 years… Emerging as Geoje’s representative stay-type tourism resource
Maemi Castle, a coastal tourist attraction in Geoje, Gyeongsangnam-do, has been selected for the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism’s ‘2nd Local 100’ program.
Geoje City announced that it held a plaque presentation ceremony for the Local 100 designation at the site of Maemi Castle in Bokhang Village, Jangmok-myeon, on the 20th. The event was attended by Mr. Baek Soon-sam, who created Maemi Castle, village residents, and Geoje City officials.
Local 100 is a project by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Regional Culture Foundation to discover unique local cultural resources and stories to select 100 representative content sites nationwide. The final selection for this 2nd phase was made through public recommendations, online voting, and evaluation.
Maemi Castle is a space created in the form of a coastal fortress by Mr. Baek Soon-sam, who personally stacked stones following the damage caused by Typhoon Maemi in 2003. It has become known as a national tourist destination due to the combination of a unique landscape built over a long period by an individual and a narrative of overcoming typhoon damage.
In particular, images of European-style castles set against the backdrop of the sea and coastal scenery have spread through social media, leading to an increase in the influx of young tourists. Recently, it has established itself as one of Geoje's representative destinations for extended stays.
Taking advantage of its selection for the Local 100 program, Geoje City plans to expand the branding of local tourism resources, including Maemi Castle.
