Naju, the Ancient City of a Thousand Years, Intoxicated by Excitement… The 6th Millennium Naju Mogeupseong Cultural Festival Opens on the 15th
Held for three days until the 17th in the Naju Eupseong area under the theme "Exciting" - Highlight of the opening on the 15th: "Traditional Costume Hanbok Show," unfolding Naju's historical narrative - "Abundant" high-quality traditional cultural content including the Changing of the Royal Guard Ceremony and the Chwitae procession
(Naju = Break News) Reporter Lee Hak-su = Naju City, Jeollanam-do, is presenting a cultural festival that reinterprets the deep history and traditional culture of the ancient city of a thousand years with a modern sensibility.
Naju City announced that it will hold the "6th Millennium Naju Mogeupseong Cultural Festival" for three days from the 15th to the 17th in the Naju Eupseong area under the theme "Exciting." This festival is set to highlight the historical value of Naju Eupseong Fortress and serve as a vibrant cultural venue where citizens and tourists can mingle together.
Following the opening ceremony held at the special stage at Jeongsuru on the 15th, the first day of the festival, at 6:30 PM, the "2026 Millennium Naju Mok Eupseong Cultural Festival Traditional Costume Hanbok Show" will kick off with a spectacular opening.
Beyond a simple costume exhibition, this Hanbok show is designed as a multi-dimensional narrative performance that connects Naju's history and spirit from childhood to the customs of daily life. It is characterized by maximizing the historical significance of the space against the backdrop of Geumseonggwan and Jeongsuru, and presents a solid storyline composed of three acts.
In Act 1, "Dreaming Seeds," kindergarten students take the stage to symbolically express the inheritance of traditional culture and its future values.
In Act 2, "The Spirit of the Scholar," a professional martial arts troupe dynamically portrays the historical significance of Naju Mok—which possessed both literary and martial arts—and the restrained scholarly spirit through solo and group dances. Act 3, titled ‘Exciting,’ brings the performance to a grand finale by recreating the life of the community like a genre painting, ranging from the governing authority of Naju-mok to the daily lives of the people and the moment of a lifelong marriage.
On the 16th, the ‘Gatekeeper Stands at Naju Fortress’ program will take place in front of Manghwaru Pavilion, offering a glimpse into the dignity of royal court culture. The event will feature a procession of the Chwitae (traditional military band) and a parade of the Gatekeepers, as well as a demonstration of the Joseon Dynasty infantry tactic ‘Wonangjin’ and traditional martial arts performances, promising to provide tourists with unique attractions specific to Naju.
There is also an abundance of entertainment for family visitors. Throughout the festival period, various hands-on programs will be continuously available at locations within Naju Fortress, including the ‘Naju Fortress Stamp Rally’ to explore major landmarks, the ‘Joseon Seongnaejang Sijeon Street’ recreating a Joseon Dynasty marketplace, and the ‘Tiniping Garden’ for children. "This festival focused on creating a sense of shared understanding across generations by interpreting the historical assets of the thousand-year-old city of Naju into modern content," said a Naju city official. "We hope you enjoy the charm and excitement of tradition amidst the autumn atmosphere of Naju Fortress."
