단속 대상은 자동차세를 2회 이상 체납했거나 관련 과태료 체납액이 30만 원 이상인 차량이다. 다만 체납액이 고액인 경우에는 1회 체납 차량이라도 영치 대상에 포함된다.
반면 화물차나 승합차처럼 생업에 직접 사용되는 차량이나 소액 체납 차량의 경우 즉시 영치하는 대신 영치 예고장을 부착해 자발적인 납부를 유도하는 방식으로 유연하게 운영할 계획이다.
앞서 진천군은 지난 6월 18일 진행된 상반기 일제 단속을 통해 체납 차량 11대의 번호판을 영치하고 약 500만 원의 체납액을 회수하는 성과를 올린 바 있다.
