Jeonnam Agricultural Research & Extension Services Selected for 3 State-Funded Insect Industrialization Projects… Accelerating Preemption of Future Food Sources
9.4 Billion Won Project to Promote Everything from AI-Based Production to Alternative Food Development
(Naju·Jangseong = Break News) Reporter Lee Hak-su = The Jeonnam Agricultural Research & Extension Services has been successively selected for three state-funded research projects related to insects in a government open competition, giving momentum to the establishment of a foundation for the industrialization of food materials utilizing insects and the improvement of farm income.
The projects selected this time cover three fields: ▲AI-based insect production technology, ▲development of functional food materials, and ▲industrialization of alternative foods. The focus is on transforming insect resources, which have previously been limited to simple rearing, into a high-value-added food industry.
The largest-scale project is the "Development of AI-Based Customized Production and Industrialization Technology for Insect Resources" project, led by the Rural Development Administration. A total of 7.9 billion won will be invested over five years, from 2026 to 2030.
The core of this project is to establish a production system for insect-specific ‘Eco-feed’ (eco-friendly feed) utilizing local by-products and to introduce AI-based production management technology. Through this, it is expected that the automation and standardization of the rearing process will be realized, leading to reduced production costs and the securing of a stable raw material supply system.
The project titled ‘Development of Materialization Technology Based on Low-Stage Purification for Mass Production of Functional Food Materials,’ promoted by the Korea Institute of Planning and Evaluation for Food, Agriculture and Forestry (IPET) under the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, has also been selected. This project, running for 3 years and 9 months with a budget of 1.5 billion KRW, aims to develop technology that lowers production costs by simplifying the purification process of protein raw materials. The plan is to significantly enhance the market competitiveness of insect protein through this.
Through the project ‘Development of Alternative Foods Using Extrusion Molding Processes’ (valued at 52 million KRW), supported by the Food Industry Cluster Promotion Agency, the development of TVP (TVP) materials, which are attracting attention as a future food source, will be undertaken. The plan is to establish a foundation for entering new markets by developing materials applicable to various food categories, such as high-moisture and low-moisture alternative meats, utilizing mealworm powder.
Through the execution of this project, the Jeonnam Agricultural Research & Extension Services (Jeonnam APR) aims to build a "full-cycle industrial ecosystem" encompassing everything from insect production to processing and commercialization. As insect protein is a highly nutritious and eco-friendly future food resource, it is expected to become a key new source of income for local farmers.
Cho Ja-ok, Director of the Insect and Sericulture Research Institute at the Jeonnam APR, stated, "The selection of this government-funded project will serve as a significant opportunity to simultaneously accelerate the transformation of insect resources into food materials and their industrialization." She added, "We will do our utmost to increase farm income and revitalize the local economy through technological advancement."
