South Jeolla Province to Provide 800 Million Won in Customized Emergency Support to Overcome Steel Industry Crisis

42 SMEs and Mid-sized Enterprises Selected in Gwangyang Bay Area… Support for Technology Advancement and Market Development, and Ongoing Comprehensive Support Measures Including Up to 10 Million Won in Export Logistics Costs

(Muan = Break News) Reporter Lee Hak-su = South Jeolla Province is launching full-scale support to strengthen the competitiveness and recover sales of the local steel industry, which is struggling due to the global economic downturn and rapidly changing trade environment.

South Jeolla Province announced that it has finalized the implementation plan for the "2026 Customized Support Project for Regional Industry Crisis Response" and will invest a total of 800 million won in project funds by selecting 42 SMEs and mid-sized enterprises in the steel and metal sectors of the Gwangyang Bay area.

Recruitment for this project was conducted following an announcement last March, and it will proceed in two tracks—"Specialized Support" and "Technology Commercialization Support"—depending on the companies' current situations and needs.

First, 12 companies, including Daesung S&M and Gwangyang Tech, were selected for the customized specialized support track. These companies will receive up to 50 million won per company to support the stabilization of production processes, the advancement of digital transformation (DX), and the securing of new orders.

Thirty companies, including Dongyang Enterprise and Pixon, have been selected for the technology commercialization support sector. They will receive up to 10 million won per company in business expenses necessary to enhance product competitiveness, ranging from prototype production and performance certification to the establishment of intellectual property (IP) strategies and marketing.

In particular, Jeonnam Province is also implementing emergency support measures to alleviate the burden of logistics costs that have skyrocketed due to the recent unstable situation in the Middle East. Since the 9th, the province has been providing up to 10 million won in logistics subsidies to steel export companies within industrial crisis zones, and applications are being accepted on an ongoing basis until the budget is exhausted.

Furthermore, the province plans to propose an increase in state funding in the government's supplementary budget to lay the foundation for improving the overall logistics system, and to expand customized workforce training in cooperation with the Gwangyang Bay Area HRD Center. The strategy is to minimize damage to local companies by providing guidance on linking with government support programs, such as the Ministry of SMEs and Startups' export vouchers and emergency business stabilization funds.

Kim Ki-hong, Director General of the Strategic Industry Bureau of Jeollanam-do, emphasized, “We will spare no comprehensive support, ranging from production to technology and logistics, to help local companies survive amidst the crisis in the steel industry,” adding, “I hope this project will serve as a stepping stone for overcoming the regional economic crisis and making a fresh start.”
