South Jeolla Province Hosts ‘3rd UNFCCC Climate Week’… Proving Itself as a Leading City for Climate Crisis Response on the South Coast

High-level Ceremony Held at Yeosu World Expo Site… Large Number of Key International Figures Attend – Presenting Vision for ‘Jeonnam-style Carbon Neutrality,’ Including Renewable Energy Transition and Blue Carbon Development

(Muan·Suncheon = Break News) Reporter Lee Hak-su = South Jeolla Province has solidified its status to the international community as a leading city on the South Coast of Korea in responding to the climate crisis.

South Jeolla Province announced that it successfully held the ‘3rd United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Climate Week High-level Ceremony’ at the Yeosu World Expo Site on the 24th. This event served to prove that South Jeolla is a true climate hub city while simultaneously providing a venue to discuss concrete implementation plans for realizing carbon neutrality. The ceremony was graced by the presence of a large delegation, including Jeonnam Provincial Administrative Vice Governor Hwang Ki-yon, Vice Minister of Climate, Energy and Environment Lee Ho-hyun, UNFCCC Deputy Executive Director Noura Hamladji, Yeosu Acting Mayor Jeong Hyeon-gu, as well as representatives from past and future COP chair countries such as Brazil and Turkey.

In his congratulatory remarks, Deputy Executive Director Noura Hamladji emphasized, “Climate response must not remain merely a declaration,” adding that “we must usher in a ‘new era of implementation’ that leads to tangible results felt by local communities.”

Vice Minister Lee Ho-hyun, attending as the government representative, stated, “The Republic of Korea will establish renewable energy as the central axis of its future energy system,” and announced a plan to accelerate carbon neutrality centered on the construction of an energy highway and the expansion of renewable energy capacity.

In his welcoming address, Vice Governor Hwang Ki-yon introduced Jeonnam’s practical policies that lead a green transition while fulfilling the responsibility for the growth of an industrial city. Vice Governor Hwang expressed a bold ambition, stating, “Jeonnam is transitioning the energy sources of its industrial complexes to renewable energy and hydrogen, and fostering tidal flats and seaweed as ‘Blue Carbon’ assets,” and adding, “We will plant 500 million trees by 2050 to become a key hub for realizing Korea’s carbon neutrality.”

At the implementation forum held alongside the commemorative ceremony, an in-depth panel discussion took place regarding the resolution of obstacles to climate financing and strategies for generating investment. In particular, the Youth Climate Action Group (PYCC) drew attention by presenting a vision for future generations to resolve the climate crisis under the theme of “AI and Innovation.”

Meanwhile, prior to the event, distinguished guests held an unveiling ceremony for the “UNFCCC Climate Week Commemorative Symbol” at the main gate of the Yeosu World Expo site. Constructed using solar panels, this symbol embodies the strong commitment of Jeonnam Province and Yeosu City toward a sustainable future and a major energy transition.
