Special train bound for Paju Imjingang Station to commemorate the Day of Remembrance for Japanese Military Comfort Women Victims and National Liberation Day Run from Songjeong Station to Imjingang Station… Visits to security sites such as Dora Observatory and the 3rd Tunnel - Recruitment of 270 Seo-gu residents and relatives on a first-come, first-served basis begins on the 16th… Abundant and diverse cultural programs on board
(Break News Jeonnam Gwangju) Reporter Lee Hak-su = Seo-gu, Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City, has prepared a special journey to allow citizens to directly experience the reality of division and reflect on the values of peace and unification.
Seo-gu announced that it will begin full-scale operation of the ‘2026 Good Seo-gu Peace Train’ on August 14 to commemorate the Day of Remembrance for Japanese Military Comfort Women Victims (August 14) and National Liberation Day (August 15).
This Peace Train was planned under the concept of a "Seo-gu residents' bucket list to remove the barbed wire of the heart." The train will depart from Songjeong Station in Gwangju, Jeonnam, and travel to Imjingang Station in Paju. Participants are scheduled to tour key security sites, such as the Dora Observatory and the Third Tunnel, accompanied by expert DMZ guides. Through this, the event aims to provide citizens with an opportunity to directly experience the reality of division and deeply reflect on the meaning of peace and coexistence.
A variety of participatory programs sharing the meaning of peace and unification will also take place inside the train during the journey to the destination. These include "Peace Drawn Together," where participants complete a coloring art wall symbolizing peace and unification, and "Sending Boarding Pass Postcards," where participants write their thoughts on the Peace Train experience on postcards to be received one year later.
In particular, as the day falls on the "Day of Remembrance for Victims of Japanese Military Comfort Women," memorial events and message-writing programs honoring these victims will also be organized. In addition to this, various cultural content designed to help people easily and interestingly understand the meaning of inter-Korean exchange and unification—such as special lectures on unification, the original musical "Hwahae-ro Musical," and the participatory quiz program "Hanaro You Quiz"—is scheduled to continue throughout the journey.
Recruitment for passengers of the Peace Train begins on the 16th. The recruitment is open to 270 residents or those with ties to Seo-gu, and will close on a first-come, first-served basis. The participation fee is 85,000 won per person, and details on how to apply can be found on the Seo-gu Office website or official social media channels.
Seo-gu Mayor Kim Yi-kang stated, "Peace is not a task for the distant future, but begins with small daily practices of understanding and respecting one another." He added, "I hope this Peace Train serves as a meaningful opportunity to remember the history of division together and spread the value of peace into the lives of citizens."
