Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City Conducts On-Site Inspection of ‘Elementary School Vacation Gap Care’ with Ministry of Health and Welfare

Minister of Health and Welfare Jeong Eun-kyeong and Vice Mayor Ko Gwang-wan Visit Suwan Forest Community Children’s Center to Check Measures for Care Gaps, Participate in Meal Service, and Encourage On-site Staff… Followed by Attendance at the ‘26th Dream Tree Sports Day for Children Under Protection’

(Break News Jeonnam-Gwangju) Reporter Lee Hak-su = Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City is making all-out efforts to resolve care gaps that occur during school vacations and to strengthen the child welfare network, based on close collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Welfare.

Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City announced that Minister of Health and Welfare Jeong Eun-kyeong and Vice Mayor for Safety and Livelihood Ko Gwang-wan of Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City made a surprise visit to the Suwan Forest Community Children’s Center in Jangdeok-dong, Gwangsan-gu on the 10th to conduct a close inspection of the operational status of the ‘Elementary School Vacation Gap Care’ project. The ‘Elementary School Vacation Gap Care Program’ is a core child welfare policy designed to provide safe protection and customized programs to children by extending the operating hours of community child centers and community care centers during vacation periods, when children are relatively more susceptible to care gaps compared to the school semester. Currently, the program is subdivided into two forms to suit the circumstances and needs of participating households.

Depending on the method of meal provision, it is operated in two customized types: ‘Gap Care,’ which supports morning snacks and lunch and dinner, and ‘Lunch Care,’ which supports lunch and dinner.

During the site visit on this day, Minister Jeong Eun-kyeong and Vice Mayor Ko Gwang-wan held a meeting with the director of the Suwansup Community Child Center and on-site social welfare workers. The participants closely shared information on the center's overall operational status, as well as the actual demand for the Gap Care Program, the quality of meals, and the progress of diverse learning and experience programs. They also engaged in in-depth discussions on effective policy improvement measures to address on-site difficulties.

Immediately after the meeting, Minister Jeong and Vice Mayor Ko personally served lunch to the children using the center, inspecting the hygienic management of the meal service. They then conveyed messages of encouragement and expressed deep gratitude for the dedication of staff working on the front lines to ensure the children's safe care and healthy meals, even during school holidays.

After completing the on-site inspection, Minister Jeong Eun-kyeong and Vice Mayor Ko Gwang-wan moved to the opening ceremony of the "26th Dream Tree Sports Festival for Children in Protection," held at Honam University, where they warmly welcomed the children from facilities and welfare officials gathered from all over the country.

This year's event held added significance as it was held in the newly established Jeonnam-Gwangju Metropolitan City. The event, spanning three days from August 10 to 12, will feature regional representative teams competing in preliminary, main, and final rounds across three sports: soccer, badminton, and jump rope. In addition to the competition, a variety of cultural experience programs will be offered, promising to provide the children with unforgettable memories.

Approximately 1,000 people, including sponsors who have long championed child support, citizens who have contributed to the development of child welfare, and invited guests, attended the opening ceremony on the first day of the competition to enthusiastically cheer on the children's new challenges.

The opening ceremony venue was linked with the National Health Insurance Service's social contribution program, "Sky Band-Aid: Cheer Up You+ in Gwangju Concert," adding to the festive atmosphere. The event opened with a spectacular demonstration by the national jump rope demonstration team and a moving celebratory performance by the "Oblize Ensemble," composed of young adults preparing for independence. It concluded with a lucky draw and performances by popular artists such as the Saengdonggam Crew, Gunjo & Solbi, the group Light Some, and the group Highkey. Ko Gwang-wan, Vice Mayor for Safety and Livelihood of Gwangju Metropolitan City, emphasized, “We will create an environment where parents can focus on their daily lives with peace of mind by completely eliminating blind spots in care that may occur during school holidays,” adding, “We will implement customized care policies more thoroughly and comprehensively so that all children and adolescents can grow up healthy without being left behind, while also sparing no support for welfare workers who are working hard in the field.”
