Eumseong County to Transform Covered Section of Eumseong Stream into Urban Landmark through Landscape Improvement Project
1.7 Billion Won Invested... Aiming for Completion by End of May to Create Resident-Friendly Living Space
Eumseong County is transforming the covered section of Eumseong Stream, which has long remained a dark and desolate space, into a new living space where residents can stay and enjoy themselves.
The county announced on the 27th that it is officially launching the "Eumseong Stream Covered Section Landscape Improvement Project" to improve the aging landscape of the covered section of Eumseong Stream in Eumseong-eup and reorganize it into a resident-friendly living space.
This project covers a section of approximately 330 meters from Sujeong Bridge to Eumseong Bridge in Eumseong-eup, with a total budget of 1.7 billion won, and is scheduled for completion by the end of this coming May.
Despite possessing excellent locational advantages such as shade, a waterside environment, and proximity to residential areas, the section has long been criticized for having low spatial usability due to its gloomy atmosphere, dilapidated aesthetics, and foul odors. Accordingly, the county plans to enhance the utilization of underutilized urban spaces through this project by transforming the covered section from a mere passageway into a resting area for residents, a cultural and artistic space, and a space for children and youth.
The main project details include: wall and ceiling renovation; creation of resident resting areas, children's play areas, and cultural spaces; installation of landscape lighting; and improvements in illumination and odor control.
Regarding the plans for each space, an open gallery where residents can relax and view artwork will be established beneath Sujeong Bridge, along with a children's play area utilizing wall play equipment.
The children's play area is particularly significant as it is being created by incorporating suggestions made directly by the children themselves, following a review by the Eumseong County Children's Participation Committee.
In addition, the county plans to create a more pleasant pedestrian environment by installing stormwater drainage chambers and renovating stormwater pipes to address odor issues. The county intends to develop the area into a safe and sustainable space by conducting hydraulic impact reviews and considering disaster safety alongside landscape improvements. A county official stated, “We will do our utmost to push forward with this landscape improvement project to create an open space where residents can relax comfortably and enjoy culture, and where children and youth can also visit, thereby breathing new vitality into the central living area of Eumseong-eup.”
