Okcheon County to Conduct ‘2026 Safety Korea Disaster Response Training’ on the 20th

Okcheon County is inspecting its joint response system involving the civilian, government, military, and police sectors to prepare for unexpected complex disaster situations, such as record-breaking torrential rains and landslides.
Okcheon County announced that it will conduct the ‘2026 Safety Korea Training,’ organized by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, on May 20 to intensively assess initial response capabilities at disaster sites and life-saving capabilities.
As the risk of complex disasters due to recent extreme weather events has increased, this training has enhanced realism by adding scenarios simulating landslides in the Dong-myeon and Gunseo-myeon areas, in addition to river flooding. The core objective is to verify that organic collaboration among relevant agencies is carried out smoothly amidst urgent situations, such as tourists being isolated, houses being damaged, and roads being washed away by landslides.

The training will be conducted on the upcoming 20th. A large number of public institutions, including the Okcheon County Office, Okcheon Fire Station, Okcheon Police Station, and the 1st Battalion of the Army's 2201st Unit, as well as related agencies such as Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) and KT, and private organizations including the Daecheong Lake Water Rescue Team, the Volunteer Disaster Prevention Corps, and the Volunteer Center, will participate in the drill.
The main training process will proceed in the following order: initial situation dissemination and reception, emergency evacuation of residents, search for missing persons and rescue, emergency facility restoration, and disease control and relief supply distribution. Intensive training indistinguishable from a real-life situation is anticipated.
As a large-scale deployment of equipment and personnel will take place, controls will be implemented to ensure safety at the site. Access to the training location—the riverside area of the canola flower field in Jeokha-ri, Dong-myeon (around address 1419, Jeokha-ri)—will be completely restricted for two days, from 9:00 AM on May 19 to 6:00 PM on May 20. The county is providing information on the restricted area through banners, its website, and social media, and is requesting the active cooperation of residents.
Lee Heon-chang, Acting Governor of Okcheon County, emphasized, “Strengthening the landslide scenario in this drill is an expression of our determination to leave no room for error in the event of an actual disaster,” adding, “We will do our utmost to build a safe Okcheon that is resilient to disasters by further solidifying our cooperative system with relevant agencies.”
Okcheon County plans to immediately incorporate any shortcomings identified through the evaluation of the drill results into the disaster response manual and establish a response system capable of operating immediately in the event of an actual disaster.
