Yeosu Port, Arrival of 170,000-Ton Large International Cruise Ship… ‘Golden Age of Marine Tourism’ Opens Wide

Over 6,000 Foreign Tourists Visit… Boosting Local Economic Vitality - Record-Breaking Performance Expected with 39 Voyages This Year, Accelerating Linkages with ‘2026 Yeosu World Island Expo’

(Muan = Break News) Reporter Lee Hak-su = Jeollanam-do is solidifying its status as a global hub for marine tourism, starting with the arrival of a 170,000-ton mega-international cruise ship at Yeosu Port.

Jeollanam-do announced that on the 13th, Royal Caribbean’s ‘Spectrum of the Seas’ arrived at Yeosu Port carrying a large group of over 6,000 foreign tourists, including crew members. The cruise departed from Shanghai, China, stopped in Busan, and docked in Yeosu; passengers visited Yeosu’s representative attractions, such as Jinnamgwan, Yi Sun-sin Square, and Odongdo, fully enjoying the charms of the southern region.

In particular, this visit is being praised for enhancing tourist satisfaction and breathing new life into stagnant local commercial districts by operating new group tour courses that included traditional markets, the Angel Mural Village, Ungcheon Waterfront Park, and Jangdo Park.

Given the large number of visitors arriving at once, Jeollanam-do Province established comprehensive safety measures through close cooperation with relevant agencies, including Yeosu City, the Yeosu Gwangyang Port Authority (YGPA), the police, and the fire department. In addition to managing traffic around the terminal and deploying safety personnel, temporary tourist information centers and cultural tourism guides were stationed to minimize language barriers.

The Korea Tourism Organization also contributed to introducing Korean traditional culture to foreign tourists by staging diverse welcoming performances, such as the Yeosu City Traditional Music Orchestra's Chwitae and Pungmulnori.

Yeosu Port is showing a steep upward trend in attracting international cruises. The number of arrivals, which stood at merely seven last year, is expected to expand significantly this year to 39 voyages, carrying a total of approximately 144,000 passengers. This marks the highest performance in history since the opening of Yeosu Port.

The province plans to further expand this growth trend by linking it with the ‘2026 Yeosu World Island Expo.’ A total of 13 cruise voyages (carrying approximately 48,000 passengers) are scheduled to arrive during the Expo period. The province plans to actively encourage passengers to visit the Expo site by providing Expo admission tickets to tour agencies and developing differentiated courses that include island tourism content.

Choi Young-ju, Director General of the Tourism and Sports Bureau of Jeollanam-do, stated, “International cruises are a high-value-added industry with significant effects on attracting a large number of foreign visitors and expanding local consumption.” He added, “We will spare no support to help Jeollanam-do develop into a world-class marine tourism destination by continuously expanding differentiated island tourism content.”
