Sancheong Hwangmaesan Azalea Festival (May 1–10)
Held under the theme ‘Sancheong, The Moment Spring Blooms’
A wave of deep pink, heralding the peak of spring, once again blankets the mountain.
The Sancheong Hwangmaesan Azalea Festival, the representative spring festival of Sancheong, Gyeongsangnam-do, will be held from May 1 to 10 in the area surrounding Hwangmaesan Mountain.
Born in its 42nd year, this festival, themed ‘Sancheong, The Moment Spring Blooms,’ will showcase a variety of experiences, food, and attractions against the backdrop of the spectacular scenery of the nation’s largest azalea colony.
Hwangmaesan is a famous mountain standing at 1,113 meters above sea level; every April and May, the entire mountain slopes are dyed in azaleas, earning it the nickname ‘Mountain Flower Garden.’
It is also called ‘Little Geumgangsan’ due to its scenery harmonizing with strange rock cliffs, and during this period, spring visitors from all over the country flock to the mountain. The festival officially kicks off on May 1st with the ‘Azalea Harvest Ritual.’ Held at the Hwangmaesan Azalea Altar, the ritual is an event to pray for a bountiful harvest, the well-being of the county residents, and the success of the festival.
During the event, a wide variety of hands-on programs are prepared for families, couples, and children.
Participatory activities such as the ‘Slow-Traveling Love Letter,’ a children’s stamp tour, making totem poles and pinwheels, creating aroma sachets, and foot bath experiences help visitors create lasting memories. An on-site photo printing event is also available, allowing visitors to instantly preserve moments of their trip.
Food is another highlight. The festival grounds feature sales areas for agricultural specialties from across Sancheong and local restaurants, allowing visitors to enjoy the region's flavors all in one place. This is expected to contribute to the revitalization of the local economy.
Safety management has also been strengthened. During the event, traffic will operate on a one-way basis, and vehicles with 13 seats or more must use designated parking lots. The festival grounds have been rearranged to efficiently improve viewing routes, and a disaster preparedness system has been established to ensure a safe viewing environment.
An official from Sancheong County stated, "We have prepared this event so that visitors can experience both the beauty of nature and the charm of the region during the peak season of the azaleas on Mt. Hwangmaesan," adding, "We will do our utmost to ensure a safe and pleasant festival."
It is expected that heading to Mt. Hwangmaesan this spring to witness the spectacular display of azaleas marking their final peak would be an excellent choice.
