Park Heong-joon’s Campaign Slams Jeon Jae-soo’s Supporters Over Alleged Illegal Banners
"Lawlessness as Passion?" Park’s Camp Blasts Democratic Party Over Election Banner Controversy
The campaign of People Power Party (PPP) mayoral candidate Park Heong-joon launched a scathing attack against rival Democratic Party (DP) candidate Jeon Jae-soo, accusing Jeon's supporters of illegally distributing campaign banners during the final stretch of the official election period.
In a statement released on Monday, Park’s campaign committee claimed that Jeon’s supporters engaged in "undeniably unlawful activities," systematically and repeatedly hanging illegal banners throughout Busan between June 1 and 2.
The Park campaign also brought up the recent controversy surrounding President Lee Jae-myung’s alleged violation of the Public Official Election Act during early voting. They sharply criticized the Democratic Party's double standards, arguing that their attitude "erodes the rule of law" by brushing off the President’s actions as a minor mishap while dressing up their supporters' illegal acts as mere "passion."
Detailing the incident, the campaign stated, "On May 29, President Lee Jae-myung walked out of a voting booth holding a marked ballot. Article 167 of the Public Official Election Act strictly prohibits exposing a marked ballot, and re-entering a voting booth is also a legally restricted action." The statement went on to criticize, "Yet, the Democratic Party dismissed this as a 'simple mishap.' If the President gets a pass for a 'mishap' and supporters get a pass for 'passion,' then what on earth is the purpose of the law?"
The campaign argued that when those at the very top flout the law with a shrug, those below lose all respect for it. This top-down disregard, they explained, has inevitably led to a situation where illegal banners and black propaganda are being normalized as legitimate campaign tactics.
Turning their fire directly toward Jeon Jae-soo, the campaign demanded, "The starting point of doing a good job is abiding by the law." They added, "Is wasting public administrative resources right in front of citizens' eyes through repeated lawbreaking really the 'Together with Citizens' approach that Jeon boasts about?"
In particular, Park’s camp raised allegations that Jeon’s campaign leadership and the candidate himself knowingly turned a blind eye to the situation. They pointed out that updates on these illegal activities were being shared in real-time within a massive chat room called 'Urachacha Jeon Jae-soo News Room,' an official group chat with hundreds of participants.
"A mayoral candidate must speak of fairness and dignity before praising the passion of their supporters," the Park campaign declared. "They should be the first to demand a clean and fair race. Silence is acquiescence, and acquiescence is complicity. As the election enters its final hours, one's true political colors are laid bare. The people of Busan are witnessing those true colors right now."
Suh Ji-yeon, spokesperson for the Park campaign, made a final appeal to voters: "We must build a Busan where those who play by the rules and live honestly do not lose out, and where obeying the law does not make you a fool. We urge the citizens of Busan to deliver a stern and cold judgment at the polls on June 3, ensuring that those who trample on the law never cross the threshold of City Hall."
