Governor Park Wan-soo Visits Tongyeong to Inspect Response to Heatwaves and High Water Temperatures
Visiting Local Self-Sufficiency Centers and Offshore Cage Farms… Ordering Protection of Vulnerable Groups and Minimization of Damage to Aquaculture
South Gyeongsang Province Governor Park Wan-soo visited Tongyeong to inspect the response to heatwaves and high water temperatures, and ordered strengthened measures to protect vulnerable groups and prevent damage to aquaculture farms.
On the 29th, Governor Park successively visited the ‘Sonjab(JOB)a’ workshop at the Tongyeong City Local Self-Sufficiency Center and an offshore cage aquaculture farm in Sanyang-eup to verify the heatwave response status and measures to prevent damage from high water temperatures.
First, Governor Park visited the wire manufacturing workshop at the Tongyeong City Local Self-Sufficiency Center in Docheon-dong, where he inspected the operation of cooling and rest facilities and listened to on-site difficulties faced by participants in the self-sufficiency program.
Governor Park stated, “Heatwaves are a social disaster that places a greater burden on vulnerable groups,” adding, “I will devise support measures so that self-sufficiency workshops can play a role in heatwave evacuation and the prevention of social isolation.”
Governor Park, who subsequently visited a marine cage fish farm in Sanyang-eup, received a briefing on Gyeongnam Province's response to high water temperatures and listened to the difficulties faced by aquaculture farmers on the ground.
Currently, a high-temperature alert is in effect for the waters of Sacheon Bay and Gangjin Bay, while a high-temperature advisory is in effect for the waters between Yokjido and Bijindo in Tongyeong. Gyeongnam Province has activated an emergency response system and is strengthening on-site response measures to prevent damage to fish farms.
Governor Park inspected the management status of species vulnerable to high temperatures, such as rockfish, and the operation of response equipment, including liquid oxygen supply systems. He also verified the feasibility of farming subtropical species such as amberjack, grouper, spotted scad, and red snapper.
"As damage from high temperatures recurs, the difficulties faced by fishermen are growing," he said. "We will mobilize all available administrative resources to do our utmost to minimize damage." He further emphasized, "We must continuously review ways to develop subtropical species and integrate them into the aquaculture industry in response to climate change."
Gyeongnam Province prepared a comprehensive plan last May to prevent damage from high water temperatures and implemented preemptive measures worth 7.2 billion won, including support for response equipment and enrollment in aquaculture disaster insurance. Since the issuance of the high water temperature advisory, the province has been operating a situation room and a joint field response team to continue on-site responses, such as adjusting feed supply, installing shade nets, expanding the supply of liquid oxygen, and guiding early shipment.
